Put the gear in first and check the number of revolutions

at the output shaft. More than 2.5, it's wide ratio and

less than 2.5, it's a close ratio.

the ring count on the input will give you the ratio as well. The close ratio will have 5 rings on the input, but you cannot see all of them without taking off the front bearing retainer.
