    Great idea,

For some reason Comp Cams, doesn't show many street grind mech rollers for the 289. However, if you go to their 351W pages you may get close. Just remember that the firing order may change. Comp Cams, Scheider and Crower can probably all make you one too.

Was thinking of the same idea to make my race HIPO streetable.

Thanks Iowa here's video of another one of my 289s shifting at 7,500 RPM in a little TR4.

In the early 70s I used to run the Zoom Perfection American 10.5" w/3500# pressure plate. Great unit and some racers would weld 2 Mustang pivots together for more rigidity. Before bracket racing, made many folks switch to automatic, this was the hot-setup. Used to love to get tire chirp into 2nd 3rd and 4th w/a 4.56 rear!

While you are all visiting Carlisle, I still have the Race Hipo:

for inspection at my storage unit near Phila Airport.

I have moved west and will consider offers.

If I get some interest, I will try to fly east to show motors.

    Thanks!!!

Most of us like the nostalgic look of the K-Motor distributor w/o the vacuum fitting. We also like the reliability of the newer electronic ignitions. With Mallory Unilites running several hundred dollars, here's a nifty upgrade I made to a K housing using a Mallory Unilite conversion kit that was only $63. available from Summit Racing.

I needed to install a single point breaker plate inside the dual point housing that the Mallory kit attaches to. Also had to fix the movement in the housing that remains when the no longer used vacuum advance/retard mechanism is disconnected.

    Attached photos of the retrofit.

Special thanks to Marv for the housing!!!

This one is a re-run of the popular 7,000+ RPM dyno pull of my real HIPO 289. Amazing what a big cam, roller rockers, springs and push-rods (Comp Mech Roller #306AR) can do for one of these marvelous 45 year old "K" motors. I added a dynamic balance job to reduce the stresses at hi-revs. Also a hi-voulme oil pump and a Cloyes racing timing chain and gears set-up. My machinist likes to torque the rod bolts w/ARP bolt lubricant, I used a few drops of good 'ol blue Locktite instead. Years ago when taking apart a few of my blown up 302 and 351Ws, I noticed on more than one occasion, loose rod bolts.

This motor also listed for sale on the SAAC site. Here's the video link:

Thanks for all of the great info, forums and helpful members on this fine site!!!

    Hi folks,

I uploaded a higher resolution dyno pull video of my rebuilt 289 4V w/updated heads for unleaded fuel and the Hot Summit Street Cam.

I have this motor listed on the SAAC classifieds for $2500. It is a great hi torque steet motor with nice hot idle sound. Has great torque but peaks on the dyno at 4,800 (vs. 6,000 for the solid lifter HIPO 289s)

This is an interesting topic. One is part numbers and the other is balance and damping:

I thought all 289s were 28 inch ounce external balance with similar flywheels and that the hatchet weight on the HIPOs was to move part of the weight from the damper back to to the crank to reduce harmonics at hight revs. e.g You should only use a HIPO damper with the hatchet counterwieght and a hi-nodular hipo 289 crank and rods. I am not 100% sure, so do your own reserach, just some things to keep in mind.

These folks know toplaoders and have a lot of hard to find parts (including entire rebuilt units) and may be able to help!

The Shelby Club did a HIPO 289 C4 article a few (or more) years back and I think they noted a stiffer tailshaft governor/spring that allows the trans to shift at higher revs in drive than a low rev lopo C4. e.g 5800-6000 RPM vs 4400-4800 RPM. I think also a bigger diameter 2-3 servo for more oomph and perhaps with the slightly less vacuum of the hotter cam.

Apparantly some shops used to switch these parts out with stock ones when doing a rebuild. So in addition to getting the right casting/serial numbers you may need to verify the correct internal parts after all of these years.

I bought the car with a 302 automatic 2 barrel half done. Work by previous racer, fabricator, owner was extensive fabrication; firewall, motor mounts, trans mount and tunnel, steering etc. I since added Sunbeam Tiger headers (had to be modified by a chassis welder), nine inch rear (I did driveshft and spring perches), cage by a professional chassis builder.

However, there are a couple of real good web sites for British V8 conversions (google these words)that can get probably get you going in the right direction. Also the kit car show at Carlisle PA.

    Best, John
