I think that is a good buy. I saw the car last year at Russo Steele. Very nice, very unique color combo. That price is at least $10K below what the dealer has in it. I think with commission, they paid $78K at Russo. They then trailered it to an auction at Pebble Beach last summer, and one of the auctions this spring in AZ. Both ended in reserves not being met. Not sure what fees are associated with that.

Enjoy it knowing you probably will not see another one like it.

A couple of us who frequent the site checked this car out before if went on the block. The paint and interior work was well done. The car was originally yellow over black (pony interior) per the owner, but it had a new door tag. It appeared that three of the four quarters had been replaced, but the body work was well done. It had a 66 9", and the carb did not appear to be correct. The blocking plates were in place in the rear frame rails. The detailing on the underside was just ok. It was too dark to see if the vin was on the block, but we assumed it was there.

There was a lot of activity around the car in the inspection area. One of the potential buyers checking out the car said he was one of the previous owners and wanted to buy it back. That may have contributed to the high price.

I used the WD 40 method on my new repo manifolds about a year and a half ago. They still look great. I put a heavy coat on them about 4 times inside and out. For used manifolds you would want to media blast them, but it should work the same. For the price (two large cans of WD 40) I highly recommend it.

Just checked the auction site. It appears to have been a "no sale". No indication on where the bidding stalled. The dealer that owns it maybe waiting a while to get the $100K - $125K they are looking for in the current market.<img src=images/icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Interesting observations from all. No doubt the car has a repop door tag. I never got why people would want to change those. These days, if a car is nicely restored, what does it matter if the color combo matches the door tag? If you have to replace a door, then maybe I can see it, but recently, I have seen more repop door tags than original ones (on nice cars anyway).

That being said, this looks like a nice car. Whether or not it is an original GT would not stop me from buy a car like this. If the drivetrain is all there, and it's not rotting from the inside out, anything below $30K looks like a good deal to me. You just don't see that many nice Koupes for sale these days. I applaud whoever restored it for taking the time to do a nice job, especially when you consider what sellers of K cars with virtually no K parts are asking for their vehicles.

I agree with Caspian. I ordered a pair of repos, and both sides had deep scratches in nearly the same place (still in the plastic packaging). I think that most reputable parts houses know these repos are weak. Texas Mustang refunded me no questions asked.

I ended up taking really fine steel wool to my originals, and they turned out surprisingly nice. If you have decent trim to start with, you might want to give it a try.

I was wondering if anyone has a picture of a Metuchen K code VIN stamping on the block and/or tranny. My friend has a San Jose car with the vin on the block and tranny but I've never seen one on a Metuchen K. I am looking at a Metuchen K coupe to buy near me but can't see a stamping on the block. Did Metuchen even stamp their blocks and trannys? Should it look like the San Jose stampings or are they different? The San Jose stamping and Dearborn stampings I've seen look totally different. I would really appreciate the help.

    Thanks,

    Craig

Have any of you purchased one of these recently? I tried to buy one about a year and a half ago, and all of the Mustang Parts shops I called told me that they could no longer get them. I ended up with a standard battery instead. If these are available again, I am interested.

I was wondering why this topic doesn't have it's own file (sub-directory?). Am I missing something?

I have seen numerious adds for K cars that have either a block or trans that is vin stamped with another car's vin.

A question for those of you in this situation - If the money was right, would you be willing to sell that block or trans to the current owner of the vehicle missing the part?

If the answer is "no", why not?

Also, in your opinion, is a car with a "K" transmission, but not the correct trans the car came with worth more than a standard casting housing build to correct specs?

The sub-directory I was thinking of wouldn't necessarily have to be for vin-stamped items only. I would like to see blocks that are not vin-stamped, but that have the correct casting numbers for sale.

I know these correct casting block come up for sale once in a while, but if everyone in the hobby knew they could sell them for a premium (pipe dream, I know), would they be more likely to check the blocks that they have just lying around?

We have all seen ads on this site posted by people who are just looking for a correct block. Can we make finding one easier?

I applaud Gary for his post, and I hope he finds the owner of that car and strikes a deal. Keep us posted Gary.

A couple of friends of mine(both K owners) and I checked this car out Friday afternoon. It was very nice. The only thing we could find that was not 100% correct was the fuel pump (non-button top). In my opinion, the workmanship was top-notch.

The car should bring top dollar, but the money wasn't really flowing at Russo on Friday night. A lot of cars failed to make their reserve (maybe 5 hours of rain was to blame). One exception was a 66 GT350H, NOM, Black, Original 4spd sold for $150K. They had four or five other GT350s going on the block today as well.

Unfortunately, I did not make it out there today to watch the K-vert go across the block (about 4:00 PM). They should have the results posted on their website in a week or so.
