Machining a block for hipo main caps.

  • I found two proper date coded engines for my car and wanted to install my set of hipo main caps on one of the engines. The machine shop I took the engines to said it cannot be done with used caps. What have others done to achieve this?

The machine shop does not make any sense on this. Of course the Hipo main caps will be used as they were never available as new, except with a block. The caps are changed by machining a certain amount off of the mating surface of the cap. This amount will be determined by the machine shop. The line hone or line bore will be set to barely touch the block side so that the caps ae machined to round again. The light touch to the block side is to not make the crank any further up in the block which would make for a looser timing chain.
