Motor mount / Header problems

  • Hi everyone

Im facing a bit of a problem with my hipo, regarding the headers and engine mounts.

I have two original motor mounts. When the left hand header ( repo style HiPo headers) is bolted to the block, the left motor mount will not bolt to the block, as there is not enough clearance between the header and block for the mount to fit.

Would it be possible that the mount is not fitting because the repo header has had its faces machined to the wrong angle, therefor not allowing enough clearance for the mount to fit.

    Hope im too confusing.

Any help, suggestions or ideas would be great.

    Thanks.

  • Unless you bought high-dollar Shelby tri-Y repro headers don't be surprised if you have alignment problems with aftermarket headers. You see a lot of them instlled with "custom" hammer dents to force them to fit.

Yes the Headers are a cast iron repop of the originals, and i am using the original unique 65 HiPo Mounts which came with my car.

I did have problems with my repop headers earlier on, there was not enough room to fit a spark plug socket in between outlets, this problem was overcome by slightly grinding the casting on the outlets. Maybe these repops are not so good?

When you say custom hammer dents? Do you mean dent the header where its hitting the mount, to make clearance between the two ? I estimate my headers hitting by about an 1/8, possibly 3/16?

    Thanks

  • John... sound like it. Where did you buy them. If new I would get in touch with the vendor and discuss it with them. Find out if anyone else is having this same issue.

  • I thought you were struggling with aftermarket headers. Didn't dawn on me you were fighting a problem with cast iron manifolds. It sounds like you have some funky castings there. If you have had the motor mounts apart you might want to double check that everything is seated properly. I can't imagine a repro casting being that bad, but anything is possible.
