Too much red for me and I don't care for non-authentic features especially that aftermarket door tag. It tells us the Kar came with a pony interior when it did not. It's just not right.

    I couldn't agree more...

The 574 Engine code tag is for a 289 4V non Hipo. The crank sprocket is the standard wide sprocket and not the narrower one for a Hipo. The heads are Hipo.

Exactly...it's likely someone bought an over the counter "Cobra Kit" with heads and cam to increase the performance of a regular-fuel 289 4 barrel. It appears to be a major project to restore this Comet, and probably will cost more to complete than the car will be worth in the end...

I emailed the seller and he said the car was one of the first ones built. He said it was the 15th one after they introduced them , the came with a 289 2v and it had the hipo kit installed by the Mercury dealer so that is why it has welded brace under hood and no nine inch rear end.

Good job, Mike. I suspected that car isn't a factory HiPo, especially because it has a 2 digit DSO...

...Carroll Shelby insisted that any cars delivered to him had to be stamped. Since most of the cars delived to him either came from San Jose or Detroit the ones built in Metuchen were not originally stamped.

I'm not so sure about that. I've seen Metuchen blocks with VIN stamps from 1965. Keep in mind that Metuchen started building Mustangs in late January/early February of 1965.

Marv, are you saying all '67 GT's came with 15" wheels? (as that is part of the comp handling package)???? If so, that is a serious error in the book.

Page 82 specifically discusses the factory tires that came on the HiPo Mustangs. A small paragraph, second from the bottom of the page, mentions the 1967 cars. F70-14 is described as the standard tire/wheel size, with an optional E70-15 Firestone Wide Oval available...

This information is also repeated in the SUSPENSION PARTS LIST section on page 179.

According to this website, there were 5,469 K codes build for '66 model year.

There were 2,378 GT350s produced for 1966 (Mustang Monthly source), leaving only 3,091 non-Shelby K codes. These are known production facts, right?

How's my logic? Feel free to correct me on this stuff. I realize it's all an estimate, but we seem to have good data available to make some educated guesses on this stuff.

I'm not so sure...but the Shelby production numbers are NOT included in the 5,469 K code figures for 1966, so it is incorrect to subtract them out of that figure. In other words, there were 2,378 additional K code Mustangs built in 1966 that "lost" their Ford VIN to become Shelby GT-350's...

I hate getting into discussions about re-body cars. There is never any good that comes from it. Either you're for it or against it. Generally most are against it because it's seen as an act of greed and deception. You can say all day long that it's ok "as long as the re-body work is disclosed", but somebody will end up getting burned, guaranteed.

This thread has really taken off with lots of hits and some well written replies. It's very interesting to read all the comments...So far, it seems the popular opinion is that it's not acceptable to re-body a K code Mustang.

WOW! That's a really big deal! Based on what can be seen in the pictures, it looks like an accurate reproduction of the Fairlane HiPo system: One of the slickest stock exhaust systems ever...I wonder if it sounds as mean as the original?

This set of C8ZE HiPo heads was SOLD for only $375.00 by eBay seller "bsa500".

Hello, I am selling a pair of matching 289 HiPo heads, C8ZE-B 9 K 23. I bought these being told they were crack free and in good condition. This used HiPo air cleaner lid and base was SOLD for $206.57 by eBay seller "fivefastfordguys".

    DESCRIPTION:

Up for auction today is an original Ford HiPo air cleaner. I am unsure of the exact year of the air cleaner. The lid measures 14" in diameter. It has the dimples in the area around the wing nut. The carb mounting width is 5 1/8". The base had 2 relieved areas for clearance on the carburetor and choke housing or possibly throttle linkage. The chrome is in surprisingly good condition and is very presentable. The lower portion is in good condition but obviously will need repainted.

This partial set of HiPo motor mounts was SOLD for $1080.00 by eBay seller "fastbackstack".

    DESCRIPTION:

These are the mounts that support the engine block to the cast iron engine mount that bolts to the shock towers. The part number that appears on the rubber insulator on each mount is C4ZA-6038-A. The distance between the engine mounting holes is 7", center to center.

These motor mounts are in good, original condition. One rubber insulator appears in fairly new condition. The other is dirty, but should clean up nicely. The dirty mount has rotated slightly and will need to be readjusted. The mounting nuts are included on the stud, but the cast iron mounts that mount to the shock tower are not included.

This style of rubber insulator mount is hard to come by and is not reproduced. Similar mounts were used in an AC Cobra. Use these mounts to complete your classic Mustang restoration.
