I had my steering box rebuilt earlier this year by Jim @ shelby parts. Can't say enough about the whole process. It took about 2 weeks from start to finish. The box was pretty rough to start with. It is now as close to perfect as I could wish for, both in appearance and operation. I don't remember the exact price but I felt as if it was quite reasonable. I would recommend him highly.

I would rather not make a permanent record of my subjective observations of the car. Being that it may end up belonging to some future member of this forum. I invite anyone who may be bidding on it to contact me.

Have you looked at how much play there is between the tailshaft bushing and your driveshaft slip yoke. You should also make sure that the slip yoke is far enough into the tailshaft housing. both will cause shuddering when the clutch is engaged.

I disassembled the motor discussed in this thread last night. Found a couple of interesting things. Enough that it again, makes me wonder as to its real story. Block is a C3AE-6015N casting with a 3D1 casting date. It has hipo main caps. The crank has C3AE-N and 3D stamped on the rear counterweights, X stamped on a center counterweight and 3C stamped on the one of the rear counter weights. The block has S stamped were the sequential 5-bolt number would be. Most of this was listed in my earlier post about the motor. What makes me again wonder is that the hipo balancer has a 3D date code. Also, the connecting rods were incorrectly identified by me as Boss 302 rods. (based on pictures the previous owner sent me) They are actually 289 HP rods with Boss 302 bolts. They are a complete numbered set. I would be interested in hearing any thoughts.

I spoke with the person who owned the car in April of 09 when it showed up on Ebay the first time. I asked about the small damper. His reply was that the folks at Jasper lost the big damper and put the small one on in its place. He also said it didn't matter because the engine was now internally balanced. This was all told to him by the guy he bought it from he said. When I asked him if he would be willing to pull the pan or in some way gaurantee that the motor had the correct internals he became indignant. I also asked if he was willing to take some pictures of the transmission servo ect. Again unwilling.

Thanks Brant, I read on this forum that there are/were problems with the repop parts. Sounds like the rubber compound is/was to soft. Is this still the case ? Is there more than one outfit reproducing these motor mounts ? Does anyone have first hand knowledge in this area and care to share it ? Thanks, Dave

I have an early 5 bolt 289. It has a C3AE-6015N casting with a 3D1 date code. When I research the casting # it is always the first one listed as a 289 (as opposed to a 260) I have never seen anything to indicate this casting was used to produce hipo motors. The interesting thing is the motor has hipo main caps and a "5" stamped on the the engine boss were the early motors had their consecutive hipo motor #'s stamped. The heads are long gone and it has late style rods. Hipo damper(I have not checked the casting #) and hatchet are also present. I had always thought it was a put together motor until I saw the "5" when I was working on the clutch linkage. Any thoughts from the experts would be appreciated. One other thing, the crank has the has the block casting # stamped on it.

I need a hipo flywheel. (If you have one and are willing to part with it please contact me) I would like to know the location of the Brinell test mark. I have been looking at a flywheel that I think may be correct. It has 3 balance marks 1 at the 1:00 o'clock position and 2 at he 8:45 position (if the center of the counter weight were 12:00 o'clock) It has the correct casting number. No paint visible as it has been cleaned/tanked. Any information on the location and number of the balance holes would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Dave
