1968 K-Code Heads

  • I have a set of K-Codes heads that are marked cast in 1968 - I am gathering they are either replacement heads or possibly from a early 68 or late 67 k-code engine?

The weird part is you can clearly see where the head should say '289' instead is cast '302' on the bottom but the 3 & 0 are ground off but you can still see the 2. They are definitely 289 K-Heads there is the cast in spring pockets, screw-in studs & markings of HP on them.

    What is the real story?

  • The heads were originally designed and cast for the "new" 1968 289/302 Hipo that never was. Other than the thermactor threaded holes to accomodate 1968 emmisions and casting numbers, they are virtually the same. The program was still born and to be replaced by the street version of the 302 Tunnel Port. That too was scrapped even though several hundred engines were built.

Enter Seamon Knudsen and all Windsor small block development was halted and/or scrapped.

The 68 heads were already cast and rather then scrapping them, they became over the counter "service replacment" units for the 289 Hipo.

They came unassembled with studs installed, and valves in cardboard tubes included in the carton.

    This should answer your question.

They are the least valuable/desireable of the Hipo heads as they never came on a car or engine.
