Hey guys just got a copy of a new book last week that I thought might answer some of those repetitive questions that come up all the time related to buck tags and things like the owners cards that have been discussed here recently.

Kevin Marti just released, titled the TAGBOOK, which unlike any of the web based buck tag decoders, it does not scramble different codes from different plants and years in an effort to decode buck tags. Good news ;)

When I ordered the book I thought it was going to covers just buck tag decoding but to my surprise it also covers door, carburetor, engine, transmission, rear end, radiator, steering box, PS pump, VIN (68-73) and owner card “tags”. As well as all the details you would expect from the author.

I know Kevin spent many years working on this book and it shows. The level of detail is sufficient to satisfy someone like me and it is also well organized so that I can find answers quickly to help with those forum answers. . Not that I do not find a couple of little details I want to discuss with Kevin ;) they are minuet and not really important except to guys like us. If you read the Foreword you will understand - Kevin would not expect anything less from me. ;)

The book is printed using the small format (8.5” x 5”), like the Mustangs and Cougars by the Numbers books and includes many black & white pictures to illustrate the details discussed. In total it is a little over 160 pages in length.

Choosing how and when to spend your money is always your decision but if you looking at a well researched, ready reference for this sort information, this book is it - IMHO

Just thought I should make sure others knew it was available.

When did the C8 replacement balancers first become available? Up until that date if you bought an over the counter replacement balancer was it a C5? I assume none of the over the counter replacements had a date code. Did all the ones put on at the factory have date codes?

Don't recall when the first C8 were available but they were around at least by 71-72. The C5's were available over the counter at least into the last 70's

All the over the counter ones had date codes as they had no relationship with being installed on an engine but to indicate when the balancer was made.

Every balancer I've owned or seen has a date code

Does anyone have any thoughts or opinions on using a spray on bedliner product (like for pick-up trucks...Rhino liner comes to mind) as a sound deadener on the inner fenders? It seems to dry very hard and be very durable.

Not if your attempting to make the final product look factory IMHO. I do know at least one restorer who has stated that they are using the product but then overcoating it with traditional sound deadener/undercoat products.

One issue is always getting the correct amount of buildup, texture, sag and make it look like it was done in a single pass (though it will likely take many coats)

Would rate is a nice or good ... as for price I have always been terrible at figuring out what others will pay with their money.

And allot depends on you. If your one of those people that wants to get the most from their stuff EBay is hard to beat... thought it has the associated hassles. IF at the same time selling it for less than top dollar will not cause you turn toss and turn, rather than sleeping at night ... set a fair price and get it to someone that will use it.

They tend to show up over on the Boss site from $250-300 but rarely do they show pictures of their condition

Good luck with what ever you see fit to do.

Edison assembly - known as Metuchen til 1980. I can remember how to spell Edison much easier.

I just use "NJ" lots easier.

So you found a build sheet taped to a wiring harness in a 67 - would be my guess since this was typical for that plant into 68.

Do these indicate the color daub/stripe on that part? Under front spring is YELGRN and under rear spring is ORG WT

For that year and plant I would expect approx 1/2" stripes only on the short leaf ... behind where the rear end housing sits

Build sheet indicates 1 yellow & 1 green stripe on front spring (applied when the spring was out and upside down from how it was installed. Rear spring would be 1 orange & 1 white stripe.

What can you tell us about the car? Eng, trans, PS? AC? body style?

    It all helps ;)

I found the original build sheet for a 67 I am restoring, it was taped to the instrument harness(Edison build car).

Scott - what is an Edison built car?

......... I have seen many later pumps with very heavy and dark gold color.

Haven't seen any major difference in the platings between the early and late ones I have. Just some thin and some better but the differences are not falling along the lines of early and late.

In any case a nice good finish would likely be more acceptable on a redone pump since it will not longer be 40 + years old ;)

......................Besides, to be factory correct they should have paint on them anyway so I don't see where the exact shade of dichromate should make that big of difference.

We might be "talking" about two different areas. The lower body was plated not painted 66-up on the "non-rebuildable" units.

Having dozens of NOS pumps I really don't see that much of a difference in tone or color... other than on some the "plating" is wearing or aging away.

Though some look to have "more" plating on than others.

These pictures differ allot due to exposure and lighting ... sorry

Could always send you one so you can look at it in person

Well Scott you have a great challenge since we have no way of telling what that particular car came with.

As for "chalk marks" are you just looking for the assembly line markings such as rotation and inspectors or are you looking for everything including paint marks and daubs that identified the parts as well as the inspector and assembly indicators?

    Quote from C6ZZKGT

The rebuilder has the parts access. They put the plating of the bottom section in my lap. I could use some help from Charles regarding proper plating colors.

    -Fred-

Fred it's just zinc dichromate, though locally it can be called other things ;)

Of course you need to be specific about what plant your discussing when subject like this come up. ;)

There are a number of documents that speak to ALL of these engines receiving VINS (and trans also) but of course there is human error and PO claims!! ;)

Kar orig. color is twilight turquose built in mich.we are going back with org color just that I have seen cars at shows with bottoms same color as car looks good to me kar has not been restored before

This (floors same color as the exterior) is not something that would be done on a restored car though some overspray from the painting of the rockers would be expected... but just overspray.

Also consider you are restoring a K code... where the end value will be much more (generally) that your typical non- K code.

Of course it is always your choice. But please don't choose how you will restore your car by looking at cars at shows or in magazines.
