I bought a set of the yellow/white caps a while back fro my 66 which I no longer have. Just to clarify, would the gray be correct for my San Jose fastback with a Jan. 65 build date?

Yes I believe that the "white" or milky ones would be the best choice for a 65 Mustang built at San Jose in Jan.

Gray for later cars from the ones I've seen but would be interested in hearing when your old 66 was built (or VIN) and if they appear to be original.

............. I took a serious look at the assembly manual and it says 5 but could be confusing as it only

shows one side on the illustration. .....................

There are other references that suggest three (Jim and I have discussed this) but most accept that the assembly manual has its limitations and mistake (like everything ;) There may have been a period of time, at some plant where three were installed. Until be get more info from original untouched cars that agree its just safer to install the five ;) IMHO

There are two different part numbers used, 375690-S for 1965 Fastbacks, and 380865-S for 1966. They have identical dimensions per AMK's Ford Fasteners. The ones on my early 66 San Jose built Fastback are gray, and are close in shade to the reproduction ones from Mark, but the original one shown for comparison is white or opaque. Could that be the difference in the part numbers, color?

    Jim

Might be... though I wonder why a change in number

I thought the ones Mark made were the opaque? Hmmmm will have to check with him when I see him next week

Here are some of the new gray ones I was luck to find at a swap meet earlier this year.

As mentioned above you need to be very careful (there is NO TURNING back once you make the DMV aware of the mistake) Would be interesting if we had an independent "expert" in your state that could work as a subject matter expert to help smooth things.

Things can get ugly to the point where the car is seized and you have to prove your fact.

In other cases (as RalphJr mentioned) cars VIN is wiped off the car and it’s given a new number just like a salvaged car (see below)

No reason to get off thread/topic ;)

    Hi every body,

........... There is only one bug on this K, everything is corresponding except one important point, the serial number in the left front apron is stamp with a T instead of a K and I guaranteed that the kar is a real gt k code, the fact that the kar is not restore can show the truth but once restore , people will say that it's a clone with a 6 cylinder!!!!!.

I did not remove the right fender to see if the serial number is ok, but plan to do this in the next 2 month.

    What do you suggest?.

I would have suggested that you had pulled the front fenders BEFORE you purchased the car!!! Sorry you asked.

Left with the fact that you now own the car I would do the following

1- Don't assume anything. Cars have been fakes and rebodied (though they were not done as carefully) since almost day one (know cars that were done when the real car was a year old) In the same case there are examples of factory screw up though these can haunt owners forever

2- Systematically go through the car from one end to the other objectively listing what you find. Things such as the frame, supports, body, sheet metal dates, evidence of repair or replacement,.......

3- Then look at the total findings of what you should have found and what you should not have found (always considering the logical reason for what you did find)

4- Draw your conclusion from the total evidence remembering that it only takes one thing not to make it a real K code and more than allot of things to make it one.

Hope your search turns up what you thought you purchased and the truth

    Good luck

Why would you have a gas tank fire in a vintage Mustang???

As a professional firefighter for over 30 years in a very busy metro never heard of a gas tank fire nor in the tens of thousands of Mustangs I;ve seen - never saw one in a yard that was a victim of such a event.

Worry about the steering column (solid steering columns with spear the driver in a front impact), the seats (lack of head support from a rear end accident and the non locking backs fold you up like a tent during similar hits) and the seat belts (lack of upper belts allows passengers to be thrown around the interior of the car and for the driver, meeting the steering wheel up close with the chest and/or head) if you want to worry about things ;)

Thank you for all the help guys. By the way Z. Ray after receiveing pictures of your unrestored 66 shelby, I got hooked on unrestored cars now. I just got lucky and bought a nice unrestored original paint 65 shelby. I will send you some pics when I have the car in my posession.

Which one did you get (there has been a handfull of "original" paint 65's that have popped up recently)

If its not one that I got access to I would be interested in pictures also. = please

    With heater delete.

1- not heater core leaks in the interior

2- no defrosters on those cold mornings or times when the windshield fogs up

3- funny looking plugs on the water pump and intake

4- the full assy (firewall plate, heater control plate and passenger side vent housing) can get expensive

You can figure which of these are a plus or minus in your book ;)

Make sure you get the heater control plate also

Remember (considering your application) you will be looking for the opaque colored ones. Believe these are the only ones being reproduced - so you should be good.

Mark in back in town (not sure why the address is not working or you can try Jim. I've seen both of theirs and either shouldbe fine for your application
