Along this line of discussion, are there any tricks to bringing out the old markings, such as special lighting, chemicals etc?

Most of the underside of my car is either rusty, oily, or undercoated. I've had some luck so far, but anything that would help me find the original markings would be great. I don't want to take the parts anywhere for special treatment, since this is just a driver car.

All good points! I don't intend to do much detailing, in fact I originally wasn't going to do any. Here's how I plan to approach it:

    1. I will duplicate markings that I do find, after photographing them. No brainer.

    2. I will not do any Markal/crayon markings that I do not find. That would be faking/fabricating for no purpose. My car is undercoated, so unless I remove that, I won't have the shift markings on the outside of the front frame rails.

    3. I might add a VERY limited number of paint markings for things like torqued nuts, if I can find reason to believe that "all" cars from that timeframe/factory had them. I'm not making a show car nor making a sale, so I don't have motivation to fake a painted pony. This would include getting opinions from yourself and Charles and other experienced folk.

I usually don't go on VMF, but did some digging through old posts there. One post mentioned using Testors paint for detail markings and then spraying them with a satin clear to preserve them.

Are there "typical" paint colors or mixes that people use for these markings, and do most people use Testors?

I hadn't planned on doing ANY detailing, but I'm slowly creeping in that direction on my non-show driver just for authenticity.

According to the Hipo book, front coil spring paint stripe should be red or brown. On my LH spring, I only found a couple of small bits of brownish paint that might not even be part of the original stripe.

On the RH spring, I found the remains of a white stripe. Both springs have the same dimensions and # of coils as called out in the book. I'm just trying to figure out why the white stripe. I do know that the car was damaged on the passenger side, both front and rear corners sometime early in its life. Would a service replacement spring possibly have a white stripe?

It isn't a huge deal to me, but I am curious.

The repro hangers would not work with the repro transverse dual system as they were too short and pulled the rear muffler up to the point that it was too close to the fuel tank.

I briefly looked at the diagrams of the various exhaust systems this weekend, and it looked to me like the transverse muffler hangers actually were longer than those on the later system. Most likely they just repro the later, higher-volume one.

I want to re-use my original spring seats after putting in new bushings. Unfortunately I didn't realize right away that the bolts were press fit and I busted them. Is there a good source for this type of hardware? I'm not even sure what to call that type of bolt.

Obviously, the part numbers were created back when VCM was stocking Krylon and they didn't change them when they went to VHT. This is an instance of the customer knowing too much (we'll have to eliminate you now, Troy). My only complaint about VCM was that it took them a long time to really get online, and then to allow web ordering and communication. I always mailed my orders in because I absolutely hate calling in an order. They are one of 4 vendors that I collectively do 99% of my purchasing from, going all the way back to the early 1990's. They are also the only one with the early fastback carpet with door sill vinyl, so I'll be ordering from them again. Let us know how the paint looks to you, Troy! I think most of the vendors stock VHT paint now, so hopefully it is good.

Disassembly and reassembly at $50 per hour

I'm on the "can of Mountain Dew per hour" end of the spectrum myself. Add in a small bag of Cheetos for every 2-3 Dews. By the time I'm finally done, though, I may have used a few thousand dollars in Dew and Cheetos. :D

Not to hijack Fordguy's topic, but I've noticed that the rear tailpipe hangers for the Arvinode and transverse systems appear the same or very similar. In the absence of the original hangers that mount just behind the rear seat (which are very different in Arvinode) how can one tell which system it came with? My car was scheduled October 21 and built about a month later, though it has many "early" car features. The Ford documentation gives 10/15/64 to 3/22/65 as Arvinode dates. I was going to put in a transverse system since they are now reproduced, but would like to figure out what SHOULD be in there.

My opinion on seeing Troy's car up close was that the "solder" is probably old hard seam sealer. I'm re-doing the seam sealer on my cowl area, and have inadvertantly created identical looking globs.

One question we both had was regarding the fender apron to firewall brace/bracket. Should it be body color or black, or did it vary?

Nice little vert he has there - even better if the garage wasn't so cold! We need to get some active Mustang people going here on the tundra. There are a lot of cars around but everyone seems to retreat to their workshops in the winter and their cabins in the summer.

We got Troy's balancer bolt off in less than a minute. The pullers I quickly grabbed and brought with weren't suitable, though. Troy could use a replacement Hipo fender protector as we used one to protect his radiator support and it got a little wrecked.

Strut rods - not sure why I got it wrong, maybe I was sleep deprived. Anyway thanks for correcting me.

I'm wondering if the little dribble in the middle might have dripped down from the sway bar mounting bracket, since yellow was often used to show that nuts had been torqued. Both rods have that dribble.

New level of detail: you have to account for "secondary splatter" as well as paint daubs, stripes, etc.

Charles - you should make a photo book of details. It would be a big seller.

No power steering, GT trumpets, 8-track, etc. October '64 kar whose only option (besides "K" motor) was a console.

Here is a close-up of the paint. The bar is dark and shiny because of a rust-converter I applied to it:

And here is a photo that shows the position of that paint (right) and another faint bit of yellow paint (left). The measurement starts from the forward edge of the metal "disk".

I am dismantling my front suspension and while cleaning the tie rods off I found something. In approximately the middle of both rods, there is a small "dribble" of yellow paint. It almost looks like someone with a very small brush took very thick paint and dripped it onto the rods - it is not a "stripe" or a "dab". I have not found any reference to this in detailing articles. I've tried to think of anywhere it may have dripped from, for instance the motor mounts which I think were dabbed with yellow. But I can't imagine any way that would be it unless the engine were suspended forward of its mounted position.

I also noticed that one of the rods has a similar dribble of yellow paint nearer to the flat end, and I think the other one has a smear of red/orange toward its end. Considering how rusty my car is, I never expected to find paint markings. These yellow ones are very solidly adhering to the surface. I will take more care to look for such things as I progress!
