The rear main cap on my set has a factory rope pin still in it ,Chuck.Quote from bobmannelRope seals were used up until 1969. Therefore all 289 HiPo engines should have rear (#5) mains with a pin to stablize the rope seal. With the split-lip seal of 1969 and later, the pin had to be removed. Anyone making a rear main after 1968 would not need to machine for the pin hole. This seems to lead me to believe that these caps we are looking at without pin holes are post-289 HiPo caps. Is it possible someone down in Mexico was making these after 1968 based on the 289 HiPo?

These caps were part parts lot i purchased some time ago and they were the only caps in the lot,i looked them over very close and see no indication of grinding or shot peening to remove metal on the caps ,all 5 caps were dirty and tarnished ,all i did was clean them with a wire wheel .Quote from s2msChuck, do you know the origin of your caps? Is it possible the 1-4 caps are Mexican with the dates ground off? I did some image analysis on the pic of your caps Bob posted using software I have available at work and find "possible" evidence of what's left of the date code "pad" usually seen on Mexican caps on cap#2. Also on caps 3 and 4 are possible traces of the cast "screw" seen on the Mexican cap pad. This doesn't explain the rear cap unless it is a very early (transition?) Mexican cap. Dave

I have worked at ford dealerships for the last 25 years and i can say that it could be possible , if there is a non mexican service replacement block out there in K land a picture of the bottom end would be worth a thousand words, Chuck.Quote from poboy427Chuck
Since we last talked the other nite I have given it some thought and
here is what I came up with for the debate:
If a person ruined a HiPo maincap in the late 60's is it possible that Ford would only sell a full set of caps and marked the rear main with the full PN rather than a partial number as came from the factory. Would make sense that Ford would need a full number for the service part(s). Do you think these are service caps if there was such a thing. Also could have been a very small run of 25-50 sets. I think this is more possible then any Mexican connection. How bout this for a pitch-very rare Dragon Snake caps!! Ray

Is it possible they are late HI-PO or early mexican caps or a casting mistake at the foundry ,i would like to talk with a foundry worker who was there when this stuff in production .

quote:Rene, going back to your question if the fan was for a 64 k code, it is a july build date fan so would it be possible for it to be close enough to be correct on an aug or sept 65 k code mustang ?
Hey Chuck.
I would think that is possible. Parts of all types carried over into the 65 if they were left over I'm lead to believe.
The best guy to ask is Fred Ballard (c6zzkgt). He knows this stuff inside out.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
René
Thats a big ten four Rene, when ever i call fred he always sets the record strait ,i called him for help on a camshaft and gave me the answer asap he is what we call at the ford dealership the hot line,

Fred thanks for the info the links provide all i need i agree with the brass filter, chuck.Quote from C6ZZKGTHi Chuck,
If you give me the upper radiator hose inside diameter, I will see if there is a Gano filter available for your truck. Here is a couple of links that shows different pictures of the filter. The ones I use are the brass ones as they do not crack like the plastic ones can.

Fred can you give some info on the Gano filter i have a older E-150 that i use for hauling from time to time i might want to try it thanks, chuck.Quote from C6ZZKGTI had a similar problem with one of my Kars and it turned out to be a pretty badly plugged radiator. Take your radiator cap off when it is cold and look for rust and junk plugging up tops of the radiator core tubes. Mustangs are known for getting rust loose in the system and plugging the radiator. I use a Gano filter to keep this from happening on my Kars that I drive.

Check to see if there is coolant flow in the radiator after the thermostat opens at operating temp, be carful when you remove the cap as not to get burned if you keep the rpms obove 1500 when you slowly remove the cap you should be ok, you should see flow, also pressure test the system, check spark plugs for a trace of coolant, as in a green tint on a plug, perform a cylinder leakdown test, is the thermostat installed correctly or backwards ?
