We've seen this car for sale a few years ago: CLICK HERE FOR MORE DETAILS

The only problem is that K fastbacks aren't selling for 6 figures. We've been following the prices on the internet and in the automotive press for years, and haven't confirmed any K code fastbacks selling for that much. Most nice fastbacks that are completely correct are selling in the high $20K to mid $40K range.

He'll be lucky if it is just an adjustment. More likely it is the result of worn parts inside...

It is known that the early 5 bolt 289 HiPo engines were serialized by Ford. These numbers were possibly used by Ford to help with quality control issues. Bob Mannel has been gathering a census of surviving numbered 5 bolt HiPo engines, and has compiled this data as part of his ongoing research into 289 HiPo engine production. This used, early style air cleaner lid and base was SOLD for a wallet-busting $433.00 by eBay seller "dorsae123".
DESCRIPTION:
Up for auction is an original HiPo Mustang, Shelby, A/C Cobra chrome air cleaner chrome lid and matching black bottom base. This was the factory correct lid and base for any of the cars mentioned, that have the Cobra or HiPo engine in it. This lid and base was installed on HiPo engines from the inception of HiPo motors starting in 1963, up to about February of 1965. So, if you have a Mustang HiPo, Shelby or an A/C Cobra from this time period, then this is the thoroughbred / concours correct lid and base combo for you.
Check out the pictures very carefully. The lid is in excellent original condition. The chrome is in amazing condition for it's age, considering this is at least 41 years old now. You will not find a better lid and base than this one. The lid DOES NOT need to be rechromed, it's that good. Yes, there are a few minor blemishes, but they are so minor, they do not even show up in close up pictures. No dings, dents, rust or any damage whatsoever. Also, take a look at the sticker, and you will notice an engineering number there that says C5OF-9368-A. This is the original factory installed sticker, as the reproduction stickers do not have the engineering number on the lower right hand corner.
The guy I bought this from used to race Shelbys. This lid and base was removed from a 1965 Shelby in the early 1970's, as a dual carb intake set up was installed for racing. This lid and base has been in storage for over 30 years now!!
This is a very very rare lid and base. Although the lid is in great shape, this auction is really rare due to it's original black colored base. You see this lid come up on ebay from time to time, but you never see it with the correct base. Ford switched the lid and base after February of 1965, and the chrome lid was changed and the bottom base was painted gold or blue. Only original HiPo lids from this time period came with the all-black base, and here it is. These black bases are always missing or damaged. The black base is going to be extremely difficult to find again, so do not pass up on this. This all-black base is not reproduced, and the reproduction lids do not even come close to the originals, as they cannot duplicate the rounded bends correctly. In all my years on eBay, I have only seen this black lid once, and I was the guy who bought it, so I am telling you how rare this is.
Original chrome lid in excellent condition, original HiPo 289 sticker with correct engineering number in excellent condition, and the correct all-black base also in excellent condition. This is a no brainer fellas. You will not see another one of these in this condition ever again...You will be truly pleased with this one. email me for any questions.

Is it possible to trace history, or authenticity of the car through the vin#?
The Ford VIN will only provide preliminary information regarding the car, including the model year, the assembly plant, body type, engine, and production sequence (consecutive unit number).
QuoteIs there a way to tell by vin# if the car
was originally a GT, or if someone has cloned it?
There is no way to determine if the car is a genuine GT just by the VIN number. However, we now know that the earliest possible GT Mustangs were built after mid February of 1965. This eliminates ALL Mustangs with Scheduled Build Dates before February 1965. In other words, if a Mustang has GT trim, etc., and was built before February, 1965, it is NOT a factory built GT. That is not to say that just because a 1965 "GT" Mustang was built February or later, it is always a genuine GT. Many Mustangs, including authentic K code models, were "converted" to GT's by adding the cosmetic features later. We have discussed and debated this subject multiple times in these forums over the years. Do an ADVANCED SEARCH and type "GT", "PIO", and "Performance Image Option" for links to posts regarding how to identify a real GT. Don't forget to search the site Archives as well.
QuoteI also ordered the 4th Edition 289 HiPo book. I'm sure it will help me alot.
Thanks for ordering the book. Part of the proceeds from your purchase help support this website.

Welcome to the site, Bill. It's easy to appreciate the original 65-66 Mustangs if you are already into T Birds. Both cars have stood the test of time with regard to their outstanding, sporty styling, and are bona fide American classics...The K code represents the pinacle of early Mustang High Performance, and are still a great bargain in today's market. Good luck in your search!

A quick run through the photos reveal quite a few items that raise questions. The 5 gauge GT dash was probably added at some point. Notice the Rally Pac is the original early style that was not used with the GT 5 gauge dash in 1965. The glove box door is not correct for the '65 GT either.
The battery appears to have the polarity reversed... The coil is on the wrong side of the engine, and the fuel line has been rerouted incorrectly. Although these may seem like minor problems, it raises questions regarding the overall attention to detail of the restoration. Without knowing the VIN it isn't possible to make a more informed opinion of the car.

Quote from garymcgowan
Does anyone know when they stopped production of the 66 model year and started the 67 model year?
Gary
The scheduled build dates for the last 1966 Mustangs found in the Smart and Haskell Mustang Production Guide are from the second week of August for cars made at Dearborn, and the last week of July for cars built at Metuchen and San Jose.

Ford 289 V8 engine blocks were cast in very high numbers to keep up with the large number of cars requiring this powerplant. Since the beginning, casting date codes on 289 blocks probably reflect almost around the clock production, month after month, year after year. 289 production demand was so great that Ford added a second plant in Windsor, Canada to augment the maxed out Cleveland works by 1966. Consider how many Ford and Mercury vehicles use the 289 engine... It's very unlikely that engine blocks cast in mid June of 1966 would be found in production cars manufactured in 1967.

This set of 6 used rods was SOLD for $269.22 by eBay seller "back266".
DESCRIPTION:
Up for auction; 6 used original Ford 289 “HiPo” connecting rods. These are the ones used in Ford's legendary 289 High Performance "K" code engines. Sorry folks, there are only the 6 of them. Ford casting numbers are C3AE-D. These were in a completely re-built original Hi-Po motor for only 1200 miles before something let go, damaging 2 of the rods. The entire engine was professionally re-built by a reputable machine shop, and that is as much as the original owner of these rods knows. One can only assume the rods were done properly. They have the 3/8" rod bolts and appear to be original. One of them has a sleeve pressed in (see picture), and has a blue color to the casting. It would seem high heat was a factor, but I was told by a friend of mine who re-builds motors that this occurs when you heat the rod to press in the sleeve. I believe these rods are also the same as Boss 302, but you would need to confirm that. The other five rods appear to be in great shape. I cannot guarantee these rods in any way and they are purchased as is.

Up for auction is a complete set of (
289 HiPo Connecting Rods. These have been in my parent's basement for almost 30 years. I got them from a gentleman who had them in a 260 (same length) when I was 16, and never used them. These are getting real hard to find. Bid to win!On Jan-18-07 at 14:28:12 PST, seller added the following information:
It has been brought to my to my attention that these are factory Ford HiPo service replacement rods. This is why they are not stamped 1 through 8.
