Hello all.....Can someone tell me exactly where the vin on a 65 K top loader tranny is located? Thanks, Ed

    Hi Ed.

If you can get the car on a hoist it will be easier. You can't miss it, its directly under the transmission at the back viewable from under the car. As I recall there's really only one flat area for the stamping. Sorry I don't have all the tech terms, but if it's there it's in plain sight.

    Hi all.

Here's a further update. I had a club run yesterday. Five people are running the yellow top coils, all bought from the same shipment as mine was in, all those yellow top coils have been running perfectly. I am yet to try my replacement, but the Pertronix I am running was perfect.

I also noticed the sticker on the box says China. Are the coils made in China? I was expecting made in the USA, how odd =O

    René

The coil I bought may be a dud. The President of MOCA in Adelaide SA bought one from the same place I did on the same day from the same shipment. He's been driving his 71 everyday for 2 weeks and we've had a lot of hot days here, and he hasn't had any problems with his.

I have been given a replacement to the one that quit, so I may have just been unlucky. I'm not sure if I'm game enough to give it another go.

So, where do we get a reliable coil for driving? I'm going to guess that you will tell us it's NAPA (Echlin) since their other products, like distributors, are so good. Does anyone know?

I have just bought a Pertronix Flamethrower. I haven't installed it yet, but on Part 1 of this thread, that was the one that was mentioned a few times, so I thought I'd give it a go. This coil is filled with oil, so I'm assuming it should be well insulated against the heat from the motor. I've got a car club cruise this weekend, so I'll give it a go and report back.

René, can you confirm the coil that failed on you was a new repop and not just a NORS older one? If so, that is disappointing since they were supposed to be a "huge improvement" over the older repops.

    Hi Dave.

I'm afraid that the one that has failed is indeed a brand spanking new coil. The guy I get my parts from didn't sell the coils prior to now because they were crap. He was informed that there is a new better type. He got a few in and I was the guinea pig, lucky me :(

The other day when I took the kar out it was 93F and when running cold it was fine, when the kar got warmer it died big time. My parts guy will swap my coil for another yellow top, but I'm not really sure I want to put it in the kar. I think I'll stick to my second hand coil, or buy a pertronix and paint the top yellow.

    René

I guess just because people are on this forum doesn't mean they're good people. They may share your hobby, but that's all it is. In my opinion I would think that people like that here are a minority, it's just unfortunate that you found one. I believe what Dave (round2k) said is right, with a little more patience; you may find exactly what you were looking for at the right price. It is tough waiting, been there done that and a mate of mine is going through it too at the moment, but you really have to be patient, sorry :(

I bought my kar through this forum and I'm from Australia. David McNeal was a perfect seller. He could have easily gone for the easy sale in the US, but he was true to his word and patient and my dream kar now sits in my garage.

Patience is the only advice I can give you. I ended up buying my kar when I least expected to, I hope the same will happen for you.

    Good luck.

    Hi all.

I wanted to start a new thread on this one, just in case it gets lost amongst the other threads, so have a look at part 1:

    Yellow Top Part 1

Here's my second report regarding new repro yellow top coils:

Well, I had the second drive with my new repro yellow top coil which I bought here in Australia, but came from VA Mustang and the kar has once again died on me in heavy traffic X(. I had heard bad reports about repro coils, so I kept an original second hand yellow top coil in the boot (trunk). I swapped them over and what do you know, the kar started straight away and sounded like it's supposed to sound. I had noticed before the kar died that from take of in 1st, the revs struggled and only got worse. With the other coil, it was idling smoothly and taking off easily.

Either I got a dud, or these new repros aren't any better than the previous ones.

I think from here on in, I will only use the yellow tops if I'm showing the kar.

Has anyone else had problems with repro yellow tops?

    Regards,

    René

    Hi Jeffrey.

Welcome to the little ol' forum. You are right about the many helpful people here. Restoration and general maintenance just wouldn't be possible without them. Nice colour Kar. It's a good thing you've got most of your original parts.

Just on a side note, typing in CAPITALS is shouting in computer language, just in case you don't know.

    Hi all.

Thanks for the ideas. I have got the new bushes. Does anyone have a diagram showing how I replace the bushes, ie what to unbolt? I am not mechanically minded, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I've heard some good things about these new ones, anyone here tried one yet?

    Hi Dave.

I have just put a new repro yellow top coil on my kar. So far so good, car fired up fine. I have only driven it once with the new coil on, so it's only early days yet.

    Hi all.

I've decided to put a toolkit in the trunk to carry vital supplies in case the pony dies.

So far I'm going to put the following in it:

    Spare Ignition Coil

Spare Top and Bottom Radiator Hoses

    Various Socket Heads

    Various Screw Drivers

Anything else worthy of coming along for every drive?

    Hi all.

I've just noticed that my clutch pedal moves to the sides about half an inch (12mm). Is this normal or is something loose? I don't want to drive it until I find out, I'd hate for the pedal to come off mid gear change.

    Thanks.

    Hi all.

I just had to replace the ignition coil on my K. The one I replaced looks fantastic, so I'm wondering if it's possible to have the coil rebuilt? I'm thinking not as there doesn't appear to be a way to open it up, but I may be wrong, and I hope I am. I had to pay a high price for a gold top that was second hand.

    Thanks.

    Hi all.

Has anyone seen this one or know anything about the car? Seems cheap, but it doesn't tell us anything in the ad.

    Hi Guys.

Thanks for the tips. The one I have has the hole on the correct side. The one I'm trying to get out is a real stubborn bugger. Nothing I tried could get the pin to move. I didn't want to hit it too hard with a hammer and nail for fear of bending the park brake shaft or worse. So far I've drilled away the plastic around the pin, sprayed WD40 on the pin and used a pair of pliers and hit that with a hammer. It has finally started to move, but it's not all the way through yet. I'll give it another try today. I must say, that is one really crappy design. So typical of the 60's, no fore thought ;)

    René

    Hi all.

My park brake handle needs to be replaced. I've got a new one that comes with a grub screw and a pin. Can someone tell me how to remove the one that's on at the moment? Is it just a matter of pushing the pin through the original handle and then pulling the handle off, or is it more involved?

It would be nice if these parts came with instructions on the packaging.

    Thanks.

    Hi all.

On the build sheet for my car, it states that originally the car had Wire Wheel Covers. I gather these are hub caps? Does someone have a pic of the covers? I'm trying to decide whether to put the original covers on as per the build sheet, or whether to put Styled Steel Wheels on instead.

Did the April build, 1965 Styled Steel Wheels have the trim ring on them? If someone has it, can they post a close up picture of the 65 SS wheel from front and back?

I have access to a set of original SS wheels that have a trim ring. They originally came from a 66 'Stang. Are these the same that was on the 65? The wheels I can get are all chrome, ie, not black paint outs. Is this correct?

    Thanks.
