My NJ car does not have a VIN on the tranny or engine either. Both are believed to be original, but I cannot prove it due to this fact.

Congratulations on the Shelby. You will have a wonderful piece of history. Tell us more about the condition and your plans for it.

Well, I got really motivated and put in another 5 hours after work. My wife hates me and my Mustang right now. I was able to complete final prep and paint the bay. I got really concerned when I went to do my final wipe down with acetone. Started guming up the existing finish I just finished sanding and feathering and sanding and feathering..... I stopped and re-sanded with 220 and then washed and rinsed with soap and water. All seemed good.
Went to spray the Krylon and all went very well from there. I used the semi-flat RTA9203 and couldn't recommend this stuff enough. Nice nozzle and spray pattern. Easy to use and nearly impossible to create a run and dries fast for recoating. Put 3 coats on and it looks better than new - almost 3 cans of paint. No more ugly factory runs or undercoating. No sanding marks either and I'm very happy with it. It was dark when I finished, so I'll have to take some pics and post later.

I can work on some design ideas (when I have time!) Would be a fun project. Does Ford "own" the HiPo 289 emblem design or do you think we could actually use it without licensing it for this project?

Good info here. I was able to find a rebuilt C8OE on my first phone call and for only $22!! It's already in my garage.
Thanks guys!

Perfect information for me Charles. Thanks! I'll be replacing the timing chain while I'm at it. To think this all started out as a freshening up of paint.

I was thinking of replacing the water pump on my Mustang while I'm at it. I was having coolant leaking down and over my balancer last year and dripping onto the floor. A mechanic told me that could be a leaky water pump. Any other ideas?
I'm pulling it off to get at the timing chain cover so now is the time. Did the '66 K codes have unique water pumps? Mine appears to be cast iron. I found some numbers on the front looks like 31047- see pics. Where do I find a correct replacement? Is mine correct?

here's the leaky area before paint...Notice the gasket style.

I also found this pic - notice the leak and the apparent leaky hose on the new housing. I thought that was the culprit at first.

I must have the Fel Pro gasket currently as it does protrute and hang out past the cover, especially in the area where it's leaking right now..

The thermostat housing was replaced last summer by a very competent mechanic who knows these cars well. I would certainly hope he replaced the gasket
I think it's time to pull the cover since everything is apart already. Thanks for all your help.

Is it possible for coolant to leak out at the top of the timing chain cover (I'm not a mechanic)? The area right near/to the left of the thermostat housing. I originally thought my bypass hose clamp was leaking, causing a coolant puddle on the timing chain cover, but I've had the hose off and had everything cleaned up for a month and haven't driven or started the car since. Found a nice puddle there when I was prepping to paint. The gasket near that area feels very soft. Any suggestions?
I cleaned and painted the entire area and will keep my eye on it. Perhaps the paint will help seal - anything else I can do to seal or should I just go ahead and have a mechanice pull everything off and look around since I have it all accessible at this point. I do know that the timing chain was replaced about 10K miles ago, but that was also 13 years ago as well.

I finally got to put some paint in my engine compartment. I spent 2 hours masking/papering the bay and car (It was breezy, but I took the risk) after work yesterday and about 45 minutes spraing engine paint.
I'm pleased to report that I'm very pleased with how the block turned out. I was worried about the 15 MPH breeze so I covered everything well to avoid overspray. The temp was 62 with only 20% humidity and with bad weather in the forecast for this weekend, I had to take a shot.
After testing the VHT paint I got from VA Mustang on an old can for color, I decided to go for it. The color is very good and looks correct to me. It matches the blue on the Air Cleaner base I have and really looks sharp. Nothing like the color on the lid of the can. The paint sprays well and covers very good. I was able to do 3 light coats with 1 full can. I was surprised I wouldn't need 2 cans to do this job. It looks awesome, with a great wet look. I'm real pumped now to get the rest of the bay done.
I also got my rebuilt harmonic balancer in the mail yesterday from Damper Doctor. Looks brand new!

You do know what those CSI type folks look for with that equipment....yuk!

I'm getting anxious to paint. I've been waiting in prep mode for so long for the right combination of available time and weather cooperation. Looks like another skunked weekend for me.

My manifolds are also recently blasted. I'm going to have them hi-temp powder coated. I'm told that this is a "lifetime" finish. I'll post the final pics when they are done.

Are you sure it wasn't S2MS? If so, and if it had "COBRA" lettering it's probably the real deal. Shelby lettering is another story. $300 seems like a great price on the S2MS if it's in great shape.

The previous paint job on my car looks great, but the details are crap. For example, they painted over the top fender bolts body color with the rest of the fender. Imagine what happened when I removed the fender bolts for replacement.
Yep, cracked and chipped paint and some rust around the bolt hole areas that will not be covered up by the new bolts. I have some single stage enamel mixed the proper color and am going back and forth whether to tackle this myself. I have never done body work before, but I figured one of those PREVAL sprayers might work OK for small jobs like the seam sealer area on the lower cowl that needs to be worked over. That's easy enough b/c the surface isn't silky smooth.
How should I approach the fender bolt areas? I could use a brush and dop on the problem areas like touch up paint, but I think it would look like crap and not hold up well. Do you think I can simply scuff up the paint area, and spray the low spots with high build primer until I can sand it smooth? I don't want a sharp tape line since the rest of the paint is very good. Perhaps I can roll a small dowel with tape and jamb it into the inner angle/bend of the fender to get a fade of some sort -
Any tips?

It has the 2 barrel 289 with single exhaust. Perhaps not a C code, but that's the only code I know for that early setup. My first '65 was a C code and had the same setup, so sorry for the mistake on the '64.5. (:

I need some paint suggestions (please be specific if you can) to replicate some original finishes on the parts under my hood.
1. Distributor
2. Fuel pump (upper and lower portion)
3. Oil Pressure sender
4. Alternator spacer bracket thingy
5. Fan spacer
6. Master cylinder cap (currently goldish looking)
7. Regulator base
Thanks!

Great - Would love to see you there Rob. Please bring a trailer full of Mustangs and Shelbys with you! I emailed you about the Showboards.

Anybody within driving distance of Minneapolis should seriously consider attending our June 3rd show - hosted by our local SAAC club. It's awesome and we're also giving away a 64.5 C code red convertible -fully restored! This show brings the nicest Mustangs around, including several K codes and Shelbys and is getting bigger each year.
Anybody interested? Mopar fans also have a huge Mopars in the Park show that weekend with a huge show the day before the Ford show.
check out the details...
