my Hi-Po engine had the original pistons in it when I bought it in 2000 & was badly needing an overhaul. The cylinders cleaned up well & +0.020 pistons worked/are working great some 43,000 miles later.

I don't understand why folks routinely go to +0.030 pistons without giving +0.020 overbore a chance.

I agree. Really no point in having a Hi-Po without hitting 6500 rpm often, Without a quality balance job that would be risky.

I had hardened seats put in my heads when the engine was overhauled 9 years ago. 43,000 miles later I have no regrets. There are plenty on arguments about it being necessary or not. But the cost isn't much, and then you have one less worry.

1967 GT350 4-speed. Yes, a Cobra Daytona, roadster or GT40 would be great, but not very practical on the street.

we can't be thinking practical here, or we'll get nowhere fast. As in VW bug.

the engine would be worth the same as any K-code engine. I doubt that the original car will be found if not already known to the SAAC registrar.

Unregistered cars are out there. There is a guy with a 66 GT350H less than 5 miles from me. AFAIK he has never sent his info to SAAC and didn't seem interested in doing so.

they are out there unregistered. But the SAAC registrar knows of many of them regardless. This is a small world, and hard to hide anything of value. The registration just gives SAAC the OK to publish the owner provided information. The SAAC registrars have many "spies" out there and are continually receiving intelligence. When these supposedly unknown cars do get registered, all the spied data is checked against the owner provided information. And all they know is not published.

    just an opinion:

I think the definition of "value" comes into play here. Would you get your money back in the sale of the car? Probably not. If you're into the car show scene and want a perfect example of what the car looked like when new, then it's worth it.

Although I'm personally not into the show scene, I certainly respect, and appreciate, those who do put in the time and dollars in their pursuit of perfection.

most of the time I get 18 to 20 mpg driving at 55 - 65 mph w/ 3.00:1 gearing. Basically stock internals 289 Hi-Po with a Vintage Paxton.

Without the Paxton I averaged 22.4 mpg during a 1500 mile trip to New Mexico in May of 2009. Speeds were generally not under 75 mph. Occasionally I would go 85 mph for long stretches.

I just switch to Mobil 1 0w-40 (from Mobil 1 15w-50) for the winter months as an experiment. I added enough Cam Shield to raise the zddp level to 1400 ppm, The oil pressure is 100% unchanged from what was indicated when using the 15w-50.

    Here's my oil pressure @ 50 - 75 degrees F. air temp. (measured over a 3 hour drive today) with a 180 degree thermostat

    cold engine:

    pressure @ idle: 82 psi

    hot engine:

    idle (800 rpm) ...... 35 psi

    1500 rpm ..............70 psi

    2000 rpm ..............72 psi

    2500 rpm ..............75 psi

    3000 rpm ............. 80 psi

    3500 rpm ............. 82 psi

    4000 rpm ............ 85 psi

    5000 rpm ............ 85 psi

    6000 rpm ............ 85 psi

    6500 rpm ............ 85 psi

It's time to buy another Autolite repro battery and it's been 5 years since I bought the last one. Does anyone have feedback to offer on the newest crop of repros? Who has the best one; NPD, Virginia Mustang, etc.???

I bought the one Virginia Classic Mustang sells, but only about a month ago. It looks very nice, but I have no way of comparing it with the other reproductions out there. It replaced my Optima battery which had lasted 9.5 years. It does weigh considerably more than the Optima.

My alternator light is burning, any easy trouble shooting ideas please?.....Billy

your best bet is to get a official Ford shop manual. They are available on CD on ebay & several of the national Mustang vendors.

The manual outlines a systematic troubleshooting procedure which will save you time & money over a less structured approach.

despite the current love affair for Shell Rotella, I would advise against using it. First of all, it has had the zinc levels reduced, so it is not as attractive in that area as it used to be. But of greater importance, it is designed primarily for diesel engines. Although they are a high compression engine, they do not run at the same rpm levels that gas engines do, especially the Ford small block Hi-Po 289's. The additive package for gas engines takes this into account, and had more anti-foaming additives as well other additives specific to the requirements of higher rpm use.If you would contact the customer service of Shell Rotella, they will tell you they make other oils better suited for high rpm gasoline engine use.

As pointed out above both Mobil 1 15w-50 and Valvoline VR-1 5w-30 synthetic oil are good choices for our engines.

If you do a search on this forum if zinc or zddp you will have plenty of reading material. The VMF also is a good place to search:

    nope.

using mobil 15w-50. has plenty of zinc w/o additives (1300 ppm). Other weights of Mobil 1 don't have as much. If using them I'd recommend adding Cam Shield to the oil. In any case, any name brand synthetic oil would be an improvement over conventional oil: less friction will help your engine last longer.

not enough detail to determine if it has any of the Hi-Po engine items like water pump, fuel pump or balancer. Seller disclosed the original carb is gone. The engine appears to be a replacement judging from the serial number provided.

But the biggest unknown is rust. How much & where.
