Quote from htprattThanks for the reply. I don't plan to run the kar hard therefore I guess one the "looks" correct would be fine. You stated a Carter Fuel pump in your reply, did you mean water pump since that is the item in question.
that will teach me to post while asleep.

Quote from s2msI've never seen a C5 with the step down in the outer ring but that doesn't mean it never happened.
Is this a balancer you sent to the Damper Doctor for rebuild or did you buy it this way? If the later I would guess they used an OE C5 inner ring and service replacement C8 outer in the rebuilding process.
I sent it in to them, but they might have just gave me one that they had on hand in exchange. I was also guessing that the parts were mix-matched, it seems more likely that it happened at the Dr. Damper's than at Ford I've had the balancer for so long that I can't remember exactly how it looked when I first bought it..

Quote from htprattI have tried to locate an original HiPo water pump for my Kar with no luck. What is the next best option. This is all that is left in the engine rebuilt.
Suggestions please.
do you want a pump that looks like the Hi-Po pump, or one that pumps like the Hi-Po pump ? There are many "button top" pumps that are indistinguishable once installed from the real Hi-Po pump. Or you can buy a Carter fuel pump, They make two or three pumps for the small block Ford that will out perform the stock Hi-Po pump.

I have (an extra) Hi-Po Balancer with the casting number C50E A . The outer ring has the step down area. I was under the impression that all of the "step down" balancers had casting number beginning with C8ZE ???
This balancer was restored by the Damper Doctor several years ago, then stored.

Quote from CharlesTurnerC30Z-6306-A crank gear
Hi-po application, 21 teeth
C30Z-6256-C cam gear
Not a hi-po application, 45 teeth, std. 289, the hi-po one is C3OZ-6256-A, 42 teeth and different thickness
thanks a million Charles. I'm listing some odds 'n ends for ebay auction and am trying to get the descriptions right.

have some NOS crank & cam timing gears, need to ID. I think the crank gear is for a Hi-Po 289, not sure about cam gear. Both gears are iron (not nylon jacket type)
C30Z-6306-A crank gear
C30Z-6256-C cam gear
thanks,

recession ? what recession.

At high rpm the numbers don't seem that off base:
5000 rpm ............ 85 psi
6000 rpm ............ 85 psi
6500 rpm ............ 85 psi
7000 rpm ............ 85 psi
anyone have first hand experience or know of data that supports the theory of high oil pressure equals washed out / eroded bearings ?
I'm wondering if the numbers will change when summer really hits and the air temperature is over 100 degrees ?
Z. Ray
Quote from dunc289Your " old " pump may have a stuck relief valve, not allowing the oil to bypass as the pressure builds. Afresh pump would change that. I have a NASCAR pump, unused, if you need one....
what makes a NASCAR pump different than the high volume pumps ?

my post is in error. Should have read "oil pump", not "old pump" It was "new" 24,000 miles ago.
I guess the consensus is the pressure is too high.
Z. Ray
are the following oil pressures too high ?
@ 75 degrees F. with a 180 degree thermostat
cold engine:
pressure @ idle: 82 psi
hot engine:
idle (800 rpm) .... 35 psi
1500 rpm ..............70 psi
2000 rpm ..............72 psi
2500 rpm ..............75 psi
3000 rpm ............. 80 psi
3500 rpm ............. 82 psi
4000 rpm ............ 85 psi
Basically a stock 289 Hi-Po engine w/ vintage Paxton, 10: 1 compression, 0.020 over pistons, a high volume oil pump was installed 24,000 miles ago during a complete engine overhaul.
Aside from the break-in period, I've been using Mobil 1 15w-50 for the entire 7 year/ 24,000 miles.
