There are very few things that make Mustang lovers more excited than seeing a first-year K-code convertible. And this ultra-rare drop-top has its numbers-matching HiPo 289! But that's just the beginning of this 1965 Ford Mustang convertible's appeal. It has been restored to have a beautiful color combo inside and out. Plus, it's an awesome driver's car with an upgraded five-speed. So as you look over every inch, you'll know this was restored by an enthusiast because it does such a great job of charming your enthusiast's heart.
This car is quite a rare opportunity. The K-codes were expensive and rare, and when you add that to the convertible setup, you are looking at a Holy Grail kind of car. That's why they invested correctly in a restoration. The Rangoon Red makes for a cherry red icon with some added luster from an upgrade later in life. Bodywork is excellent with straight panels and good alignment throughout, which means you can shut the doors with confidence. The brightwork is complete and straight on everything from the mirror-like chrome bumpers to the special High Performance 289 fender badges. And speaking of special badges, we quite like this car's kind of incognito style. You'll see from the full package that this is built to be a solid driver with styled steel wheels and redline tires, but they also don't try to make it into a GT clone. There's nothing wrong with the GT cars, but most K-codes already look like that. So considering a K-code convertible already represents only about one percent of total production, a car showcasing its sunning fundamentals and not hiding anything behind GT add-ons makes for the kind of classic many people only see once in a lifetime.
The well-fitting black roof looks great in place, but the rear distinction comes when you power it down. The red interior is quite complete, right down to the matching convertible boot. So this special pony car is like a full red-blooded all-American. There is a look of fresh investment in the upholstery, dash pad, door panels, and plush carpeting. In fact, the little things like the door jambs and sills look great. And we love how this likes to stay vintage right down to the AM radio that powers on and the under-dash lights that greet you when the door opens. But what you'll love the best is the driver-ready style. You have front bucket seats, a classic thin steering wheel, and Rally-Pac with a clock and tach. And have you counted the gears on the Hurst shifter yet?
Under the hood is the numbers-matching 289 cubic-inch V8. Ford was known to stamp the VIN on these K-code motors to help identify the special blocks that were approved for HiPo duty. It takes this significant history seriously and reminds you of what the K-codes inspired by wearing Cobra finned valve covers. And the Ford hoses, Autolite battery topper, and other details keep this quite classic. But as a true driver this doesn't just stand on ceremony. You have nice upgrades like a Holley four-barrel carburetor, a Mallory distributor, and an aluminum radiator with Derale electric fan. It's a powerful pony car that loves to run, and best of all, this was upgraded to a five-speed manual transmission to give you an extra gear and better ratios to enjoy it all to the fullest. The clean undercarriage reminds you this is a car you can drive with confidence. And power steering, power brakes, and front discs makes this K-code a solid all-around cruiser.
The sale comes complete with the owner's manual, restoration photos, and documentation showing this car was original won in a Command sweepstakes back in 1964! This is an ultra-rare Mustang that gives you the best classic features while also delivering awesome driver upgrades. So if you want an all-around stunner, call today!
