i have installed it both ways

with it installed as on the L pic

the fork seems to have a tighter fit

but, like i said, the fork will be

pushed inward a smidge due to

the wire rubbing up against the fulcrum.

on the other hand,

when installed as per the R pic

it does not rub

but seems to be a looser fit.

it seems that this should be a

very common issue

as many replace their clutchs

i have searched the shop manual,

all the forums,

and 'how to' sites....IN VAIN!

my nephew is a mechanic,

and he's not sure?!!

surely, s.o. out there

can solve this riddle

does anyone know which direction

the clutch release lever spring goes?

this is the one that goes into the 2 small holes

midway down the lever and then snaps onto

the little nib on the fulcrum inside the bell H

does anyone know?

here is a pic of it both ways

the pic on the L shows the that the marked area

will press into the fulcrum

and the R will curve away from it

which is correct?

the one on the L seems to hold it tighter

but the fork moves out of the fulcrum

a little bit when it is moved

the older gear above came out of the 3 spd

and it looks like a L handed one

what do you think?

are the teeth just twisted wrong?

a certain transmission

would ONLY be R or L handed?

one couldn't put a L handed gear

in a R handed transmission?

but the cable will always turn one direction?

here is a picture of the speedo gear

that came out of my son's '66

(sorry to post about a non hipo car,

but a lot of what we're doing to it

pertains to the hipo's also)

the new gears from Modern Driveline

appear to have too few (large)teeth

which are going R handed.

our's appearing to have 19 teeth

and going L handed.

or is it so worn that it only appears to be L handed?

my Q is:

why would there be R and L handed threads?

i'll use my TIG welder

to get a nice clean weld

even tho no one will be able to see this!!

i read about the 'gap'

and i think it is to ensure adequate

spacing between the throwout bearing and pressure plate fingers.

but not sure quite where the feeler gauge goes?

also, here is the equalizer bar frame bracket.

is the pivot pin pressed on

or is the outer end flattened down to hold it in?

is it supposed to rotate?

if not i'll have to put a spot of weld on it to hold it firm?

would anyone happen to have a pic of a bent one?

we are installing a new Z bar on my son's '66 right now.

maybe i should weld in a gussett?

after doing some checking

ford does make two sizes of starters

on one the outer flange is 4.084

and the other one is 4.130

i need the smaller one

but was sold the larger one by napa!!

they are going to check it out and let me

know why this happened,

and if i got the wrong one,

they will swap with me.

in looking at the teeth on the larger one,

i see where the starter teeth were worn

about 1/8" in

the gear definitely set back to far

and was not getting a good bite on the FW teeth

does one tighten the Bell H to engine bolts?

the starter flange measures 4 1/8 outer dia

the hole in the blocking plate is a smidge under 4 1/8 dia

what is the best way to enlarge

oh, here i go on to post 290!!

i have bought things in the past

and have told the seller

that if it turns out

that i sell it for more profit than expected

i'll give him 25% of that 'unexpected' profit

this always eases their mind..

it's called the 'ahrens honesty factor'

and in all cases when that has happened

they have refused to take it!!

i am still working on the shock towers

but cannot ground down my welds until

we move my son's '66 out.

we would hate to mess up his fresh

engine bay and T5 etc.!!

but should be finished in a few weeks

and then will have another progress pic or two
