Thanks Fred and Bob. The casting date of the heads is 6A31 so I will go with Bob's recommended 6BA. This would be the first week of Feb 66 correct?

Fred the base is stamped correct and everything about the carb numbers are correct as it is the original carb that came on the car. I think you are correct when you say they probably got it mixed up with someone else's tag.

    Gary

I just got my carb back from Pony for my 66 and I had to have them put a tag on it as mine was missing. This is the information they put on the tag: C5ZF C and a date code of A 5CB.

    Looking at Tony's book and I don't even see a C5ZF C engineering number.

My engine build date is 6B17C and the scheduled build date for the car is 02C.

Are the dates for the carb supposed to be calculated based on the engine assembly or car scheduled build date?

Am I correct in thinking this tag is totally incorrect? What should be on my tag? Thanks for any help.

Sorry, I was refering to K Mustangs. Couldn't tell you if there is a difference on the Fairlanes.

Yes, there is a difference with the Fairlane and the HIPO radiators are very hard to find. The early HIPO Fairlane exhaust like Gene is showing is even harder to find. I think there were a few early 64 1/2 HIPO Mustangs that also had an automatic choke 4100.

    Gary

I'm guessing the car is in CA. Maybe you could make a post for someone in the area to help you out. I'm in NH at the moment and can't do you much good in CA.

Please go slowly and make sure you know what you are paying for. I just had to buy an original fan and generator for a K code. Cost was around 1300.00. Just to purchase an original 4100 restored carb for this car will set you back 1000.00 to 1500.00. So, depending on what true K parts are on the car and if they have all the right date codes for the engine and car will greatly raise or lower the value of the vehicle.

I know Ralph has forgotten more than most know about K codes and you can rely strongly on what he tells you. The suggestion by Dave is another good idea.

    Hope this helps.

I've got a couple nice photos but can't seem to post them, computer illiterate!

Hello Terry, any luck on getting a HIPO radiator? I am keeping my eyes open for you one. Email me the date code again and how much you will pay so I have an idea.

Can you email me the photo's? I need to see some detail on how the auto choke hooks up on the Fairlane.

    Thanks,

Thanks. I added some additional photos. This is supposedly an original '66 K Code Fastback, but has a '65 K Code block. Does anything look suspicious or incorrect for a K code, in the photos?

Steve - There is no way this is an all original 66 K code Fastback. I know you are probably chomping at the bit to get a K code Mustang but I would suggest you do some researching on this wondeful forum and learn first hand about K code cars. It is very difficult to fully verify a K code with just a few photos.

If you buy one without all the correct K code parts it can be very expensive to put the car back original. True K code engine parts are sky high right now.

If you don't have the time to learn all the in and outs of a K code maybe you could get someone more knowledgeable to inspect the car for you.

    Good Luck

Do you really think it would bring that much Rob? With the date codes of 5K6 and 5C18 on the heads and with a build date code of 5J1 on the engine makes me think it was pieced milled together with nothing matching. Couple this with the fact that it has no distributer or original fan and the price might not be that high. But, you are the expert and I certainly would yield to your estimate in this area.

    Gary

Thanks Rob. Sorry I didn't respond back to your email but I am in NH and I don't have DSL or Cable and on top of that I have to use WebMail as an email server.

I have all the goodies necessary in my posession to completely restore the engine and engine bay, except the valve covers and radiator. I hope to have them very soon.

When I get back to Florida I will begin the process of pulling the engine and detailing it. When I have it in the test stand I will shoot a couple of pics so you folks can look at it and make sure I have everything correct.

Gary , If you need any help about your Fairlane give me a yell I also own a 64 Fairlane Sport Coupe K-Code , I live just south of DesMoines in Iowa I am still missing the fan but thats it and the car still needs a lot of work but it drives great and thats what counts , and its easy to get in the trunk just put a screwdriver in the hole and you will feel a slot just turn it and it will pop . Thanks Larry

Thanks Larry I will take you up on the offer. I'm sure I'm going to need a lot of help when I go to put all the trim and interior back. Yeah, I was able to get the trunk open after Rob told me just like you did how to do it. Thanks again for the help.

    Gary

Well, I located a radiator with a date code of L30. This was the last of the HIPO Fairlane parts I needed. I have to make a trip to New England area and on my way up I am picking up the radiator and the generator. When I get back I will take the engine out and remove all the trim and get it ready for the paint shop.

I will start taking pictures of the process and if anyone is interested I will post them.

Thanks to all who helped up to this point.

    Gary

Thanks for posting the want add for me. Well I'm not sure if there is a few surprises or not. If I can figure out how to open the trunk I will be able to inventory all the parts and then I will know what is missing. The only thing is when I last spoke with Rob he said the front bumper had a few spots on it. Heck, I can't even find the front bumper. Hopefully it's in the trunk but I don't think so.

I knew going in this was going to take a lot of work so with that attitude you are ready to handle what ever comes. I knew all the chrome pieces will have to be sent out and re-chromed. I knew the interior would have to be all re-done. I knew the dash would have to be sanded and re-painted with the proper paint. Who ever did the exterior paint job used the same paint for the dash.

If the majority of the interior and exterior trim pieces are there I will be happy. I'm think I can get the majority of this car back to original for around 20 to 25 thousand. Very little body work is needed. A few small dings here and there but overall really a straight car. I can find no evidence of rust but I'm sure there is some bondo on the car. Again, that doesn't really bother me because a good paint and body man can fix any of that if it needs it.

The shinning example of this car is the K Code engine. All the date codes match the assembly date of the car. It has all the K code specific parts on it except the generator assembly, fan, distributer, valve covers, and carburetor. I have all of these parts with the correct date codes where applicable except, of course, the generator assembly.

So, yeah there is a lot of work to do but at least I don't have a rust bucket to deal with. Thats when you can sink a lot of money in one of these cars.

On another note, I finally sent the carb for my 66 K FB to Pony Carbs. FedEx picked it up today. I am taking the original Ford 3 duces off and putting the original carb assembly back on. Another job I have to do.

OK,I've rambled enough. Thanks for the help.

    Gary

Well, the car finally go here. Larry, Phil from the FCA site got back with me. Sorry but they have been sold. Oh well, we will just have to keep watching for another one.

I definitely have my work cut out for me but I will have that car and engine looking like new. I don't expect to get much work done before I have to leave for New England but when I get back I will devote full time to this project. It has dual exhaust on it now but I'm almost positive it came with single exhaust. I'm going to go out in a little while and figure out how to open the trunk and doors. No lock in trunk or door handles. Door handles are supposed to be in the trunk.

Does anyone know if a 1964 Comet radio will work for a 64 Fairlane?

Thanks to all for the help,

    Gary

PS Wish I could post in the FCA site.

Larry - Yeah I called the driver and he said it would be later today. Something about hours driven and paper work. I haven't heard anything about the generator and pulley yet. Hopefully he will get back with me this weekend sometime.

Larry are your floor boards painted the same color as the interior or the outside body?

    Check these out.
