Externally it's a little difficult. One clue (though this does not confirm a Hipo C4 as the parts can be added) would be the large "C" on the servo cover. This goes along with the larger piston below it
-
Does the repo ones have the engineering numbers on them as the original ones ?
-
Wasn't going to bring it up but you are very correct. Those stampings are not always very clear after all these years
-
Where did you get the part or engineering number from? haven't seen adjustables with the engineering number (from Ford) stamped on the shock it self as you listed. Normally the big styled "G" the three seatings, arrows, date and the FoMoCo or AUTOLITE is pretty much all there is on the ones I have
-
Wow .... got a pair of original Gabriel adjustables ? FoMoCo or Autolite ones?
In any case I don't now anyone that rebuilds them other than a replacement of the upper bushing and a paint job.
Sorry
-
That's a hipo the date will tell you if it could be one used on a Hertz car. Of course you will need to compare it to when your car was at San Jose to be really correct. Don't want to install a dist that was made after your car was built
-
Seen a few over here through the years and of course a fair number of them in NZ and Australia.
Almost bought one on a whim ... Kind of a cross between our 70-71 Torino on the rear and the 71-3 Mustang (with 4 headlights) on the front. At least they look more attractive than the four door Falcons we see from over there

It's probably some other T bird wheel cover (or Galaxie maybe?). All in all, the whole suspension looks much like what the Shelbys came with: they also used stiffers springs, adjustable Gabriel shocks and Thunderbird wheel covers (Kelsey Hayes mag wheels optional).
Yes that is pretty much what is being said
Quote from HelmantelA plausible scenario is that Ford just installed the Shelby suspension parts and offered it as an option on Mustangs. The parts were already there
Not really sitting around. Remember that Shelbys were only built at one plant and Mustangs with this available option were built at two other plants that didn't build Shelby's. So no the parts were already there

But the option was apparently someone brain child ..... but was a flop and not offered again durign the era.

John I've got "D's" on even 6 cylinders in the later 60's and on non disc brake car in 68.
Do not currently have a picture of a 65-66 6 cylinder with a "D"
Of course it is not always easy to determine if a car in a yard originally had drums or disc brakes (V8 cars)

Of the pictures of early NJ cars ... don't see as many scribes as Dearborn. More like lesser marked San Jose cars so far

I might agree that the "Ds" could indicate Disc brakes but not a clue about the others.
Bill
Often we see 65-66 cars (mostly Dearborn - but hit and miss on San Jose cars) with a "shopping list" written on the radiator support. Often these include the second rotation number, interior color/code, exterior color and other notes to remind someone on the line what was done or needed to be done.

John, are you speaking of Dearborn, NJ or San Jose?

Beneath that is basically a copy of the door data plate with all of the numbers stamped on a thin piece of metal.
The "Little metal tag" was originally attached to the door tag and stamped at the same time. The dealer would have snapped it off and attached (my understanding) to the owners card. Have found some still attached to the door tag

John asked me to post the following for him

I've added the one below (front and back) from one I had sitting around in a drawer)

If you don't know the original dealership that sold your car is there a way to obtain the list of dealers that would have been served by a particular DSO?
Kevin Marti has such a list and I'm sure a couple of other people do (I do not have one presently) Of course this would only narrow it down to maybe a dozen to 30 different dealerships. On the card (if you have one or the info written in the owners manual) it should narrow it down by looking at the 6 digit code. As I understand it, in this context it decodes as the district then the dealership

quote: Don't leave us/me hanging, what does the "K" and the "D" stand for?
Plenty of examples of "6/D" and "S/D" for this and the years before and after.Just one of those pet peeves
-
Believe that 72030 would identify the region and the dealership from where the order came from for the car
-
Kliz Your so right. People hear or read about a mark then with no real reference to other cars from the same plant and time attempt to reproduce it
Same goes with so much on these cars and much of what we see in print can be very misleading. For example this month’s Muscle car magazine again repeats (for lack of a better term) an old wife's tale about the “K” and the “D” found on many 67 San Jose built GT350's. The explanation is completely wrong and someone reading the article will likely make the mistake of reproducing it on a different car. HINT – they have nothing to do with something referred as “knock down”
IMHO that is the power and value of forums like this one. Information can be shared and publicly reviewed based on the current and best available knowledge.
And yes (as Charles said certain classes and organizations) judges can and do deduct points for improperly marked parts
-
"I have heard that it did come with 15" Thunderbird wire wheel."
Yes a mistake printed in an older Mustang Monthly article. Always the problem, you can go back and undo a comment once it makes it into print

Not many differences Here is a picture of a 67 T5 I ran across last month (sorry not a K code)

Odd thing on this particular car was that they installed a 65-66 export brace rather than the expected 67-up style
