Always tried to find a date code on one of the shrouds as well - with no success. This has to be one of the few parts on a Mustang with no means of identification. Have always found this odd. Could an ink stamp have been used to identify this part?

Never heard of or seen a an ink stamp on a early shroud

Anyone have a pristine original to examine and post results?

Here is what I can offer. Old NOS example

    Yes its stamped 5F06K310812

IMHO simply a opps on the part of the stamper. Not the first time we've seen this - though rare

Maybe this will help in some small way

Thanks again Jeff, you mention check the VMF,Concours Area,is this on the K Site,if so where can i find such info please,i have been looking for pics of Restored Undercarrages without much success.

    Thanks,Shane

Try here (its on Vintage Mustang Forum)

    http://forums.vintage-mustang.com

If you look in the General discussion area you will find the Concours area about half way down the page just below the Mod and Custom area

Be very careful IMHO when looking at pictures of "restored" cars. You never know if they are correct or if they simply copy someone elses "restoration" Even if they won some award. Instead search out low mileage unrestored examples from the same year, month and assembly plant

    Just my 2 cents ;)

I see in the NPD and other catalogs you can buy a body Schutz spray gun. Has anyone used one of these? What about the spray can of sound deadener? Do either of these give good results?

Yes have used/tried that and other guns and was unhappy (finished product did not look like factory) with the results

    Quote from Qman

Looking for some help (if this has been covered just point me in the right direction)...I know factory sound deadener was sprayed on the inside of the rear quarter panels the inside of the doors and the inside top of the front fenders. Should I be aware of other locations?

The methods and locations can vary depending on year, assembly plant and worker. Add to this when the material as applied (before or after primer coat, paint coat - before or after the the car is assemblied)

Lots of steps and details for understand before you start if your really restoring a car IMHO

How do most folks apply this undercoating? Thanks for your help folks. Qman

Depends on what area. Currently most of the products available do not look anything like the original stuff. If does not build up to the original thicknesses or provide the original look.

Currently I'm working with a brushed on product that is later overcoated with a spray to give the final "sprayed on" look. But its a combination of produce and technique that produces the final look

Hello,i need help with Colour codes for third member( Red)

If you do a search I think you will find some recent discussions on this subject.

For something right out of a can I would start with DP74 and tint it to get something close

Grey ( Cast Iron )for Gear box and Various undercariage components,VHT Do a Cast Iron in a Spray Can,is this colour close too original, can anyone steer me too a good Link for good Undercarriage Detailing for 65 K Car.

Cast Iron greys can vary allot depend on what company makes the stuff. Most of the time they will work ok for cast iron non treated parts if you shoot them every thin (so they don't look painted. Remember the cover, bolts, machined surfaces, large nut and end cap are not finished the same color.

As for "various components" in general I would say no, the cast grey is not even close since you are likely thinking of items such as spindles, strut rods and other steering parts. These were all heat treated so they take on a completely different look and you have to "brighten" the different machined surfaces

Here are a few examples of later parts (what I have handy) that should give an idea of what I'm discribing - Hope it helps

Try some DP74 it will give you the somewhat shinny look of the original paint (rather than the flat open finish of other products. You can tone or tint is a bit if you want to get closer to the original color (I do)

Don't forget the bare machined surfaces ;)

There were some changes between the way cars were built (even the period of time they were built) and how they were run. Have some build up sheets for a "R model" engine build or two.

Here is a list from a 67 Trans Am Build - Should have the dyno sheets and another sheet showing plugs, gaps, timing, fuel and oil stuff also

Might want to search online but the company that makes some of the wrinkle paint use to make it in a white (easier to color) but most auto shops don't carry it.

The oven works best for me (just did a set of Cobra valve covers) putting on the two coats and while the second one is still wet (different than when baking regular paints) get it in the electric oven.

250 for about 15 mins seemed to produce the best consistent finish if the paint coat is fairly consistent, over the complete surface. Not the big heavy wrinkles but the small light ones like what was done originally

Remember that the lower clamp bracket and the wire cover were not wrinkle

    Hope this helps
