It makes not sense at all that they are spending all this time and money on this when they should be putting all of their energys on keeping from going bankrupt!

Especially when they give executive parting gifts. "Here's your cash, thanks for hosing the company. Bye now."

We could do a new custom V8 engine logo of our own that says something like "Hi-Po Pony Club".

Troy, get right on it...[Blocked Image: http://www.hometown.aol.com/misterend/images/ceofired.jpg]

Well, since Gerald's (65Hipo)car and mine were built on the same line just a few days apart, mine originally would have had the felt pad, too. It'll be interesting to take a closer look when I take this thing apart. I like the fact that whatever is on my car is probably way more splashproof than the original design.

Sure beats a flattop cap made to look like a hipo air cleaner, with earflaps that have sewn-on emblems and a 4-blade propeller coming out the front!:D:D

Or how about a black Stetson with checkered band and Hipo patch on the front? Just kidding - it is late on a Friday.

I propose a hat/sticker combo with Marv's design, but the sticker version would have "HIPOMUSTANG.COM" under the "289" or above the emblem.

I was buying some firewall and apron seals and grommets, and found that the clutch pedal rod seal is from 12/14/64 onward. VAMustang catalog states that earlier cars did not use them. Did they have anything? Did they have this screwed-on material with a hole in it instead of the rod seal?

My car appears to have one but it is mounted to a flat piece of material that is screwed onto the firewall. I haven't examined it closely because I'm not working on that part of the car yet.

To think this all started out as a freshening up of paint.

You just wait... Rustoration-itis is catchy. My project started out to replace a slipping clutch, fix the brakes, and find a pesky rain leak. Now I'm looking at more correct-looking finishes, more correct parts, seal the chassis, replace the bushings... About all that's left on the car are the engine block, tranny, and rear suspension, and they won't be there much longer! And I'm only building a driver for cryin' out loud.

    ;)

You'd think it would take gorilla strength to break it, but here's what happened. I did have to use a long (about 3') pipe on a 1/2" drive socket wrench to initially break them loose. But after that I was only using the socket wrench (about 1' long) and not having much trouble. The driver's side bolt creaked a little when I got halfway out, but it came out. The passenger's side one seized and broke when I was halfway out. I stopped a couple of times to squirt WD40 on the exposed hole & threads, backing up slightly then continuing onward.

On the rest of the entire front suspension, only the spring perch nuts have broken on me. I also broke the bolts on one bumper arm, the other side having been replaced a decade ago.

Does Ford "own" the HiPo 289 emblem design or do you think we could actually use it without licensing it for this project?

Ford would own the "289 High Performance" emblem design. But this website and the Tony Gregory book both use images of it... Maybe Hank (RacCol) could shed some light on the issue. Also, I believe the MCA logo (and others) use the tri-bar running horse emblem (or a drawing of it).

Has anyone broken off one of the bolts for the tubular crossmember and come up with a decent way to deal with it? I wasn't going to remove mine, but it was in the way of the lower control arm bolts. I don't know if I can just drill it out from underneath, or if I need to cut an opening in the frame rail to get at it. At least I finally got the entire front suspension off!

I don't know about other vendors, but at cafepress.com (no, I don't work from them) a person or business can set up their own "store". I've ordered bumper stickers from them with my own designs. All you do is upload a picture (.bmp, .jpg) and they put it on high-quality vinyl stock. As for 500-1000 of them, I won't pre-buy them, but if I can find a vendor, maybe there would be some way to arrange for Hank (our host here) to get proceeds for the site in exchange for using a site-related logo similar to the one on the fender protectors.

Charles, do you know if your club gets their stickers at a local source or online?

I think that we need a "club" type window sticker, like the MCA ones only better looking & for HiPo cars. Just thinking out loud, but I would bet that a place like CafePress.com could probably make them cheap. One question though: Do MCA ones go on the inside of the windshield, like the old state park stickers, or on the outside? I would think that inside would be better & more durable. Might be cool to have it be somewhat metallic, too.

Oops - I just realized it is Wednesday. No wonder they didn't pick up my garbage this morning as I thought it was Thursday. Here's my too-late post:

    Hey Larry,

If you get a minute, I would appreciate it. My car is Oct. '64. It may be a couple months before I get to that part of the car since I'm working on the underside starting at the front(currently doing front suspension). But I'm always daydreaming ahead.:D

    Thanks!

I just got a cheap light ($10) and special UV protecting flourescence-enhancing goggles ($20)from The Blacklight Shop online. As soon as I get to try it on the car, I'll report back.

I did try it briefly on a lightswitch in the house and it made the tiny paint splatters on it glow. I guess a lot of people buy them to find scorpions in their backyards.

Before I got my car, some of the sheet metal was replaced in the trunk. Although the spare tire carriage bolt mount was transferred to the new panel, I don't know if it was put in the correct place or orientation (I've never had a spare, but will after restoration). can someone with an early San Jose car (in is a fastback) post a picture and some measurements? Better yet would be photos with rulers, but I'll take what I can get. May as well get it right before I try to put a tire in there...

I especially like the idea of reference photos being available to everyone. Lots of people take photos, but unless someone asks a question, nobody else gets to see them.

Yeah, my attitued about MCA in the past was, "Who the #$@% are they to have any opinion or say about MY car?" But now I see an advantage from information sharing. As far as I know, there is only one MCA-affiliated club here in MN, and it is way up north in Duluth. I'm not inclined to drive more than an hour to go to national events, so it is good that I like Duluth.

    Jeff & Charles,

Like probably many people here, I wish you could have you in my garage for a day. At least we have the power of the internet!

I'll try mineral spirits. I'm really hoping that there is something left under the dusty rust layer on my car. What I fear is that in cleaning the rust off, I will destroy marking remnants.

I do know that some things are still under the undercoating, as I just discovered a yellow daub at the fuel line clamp/bracket on the outside of the driver's-side fender apron. In fact, I suspect that is where the drip in the middle of my strut rod came from.

Thanks for all your help to me & others. I may have to join MCA soon.
