I give up. I have tried to use the search function to locate a piece of information that I know I read on this forum. I was working on my car today and decided to order a reproduction data plate for my door. Same story, some time in the past the data plate was sprayed over, after which someone tried to get the spray off taking part of the background paint off. I am pretty sure that I read in one of the treads that the original data plates had a small letter down in the right lower corner that is not reproduced on the repro plates. Can anyone confirm this? If so, what was/is the letter. Thanks

    Bob,

Sorry to hear it. I purchased your book for my father who spent 50 years working in a junk yard and he was very impressed by your book. I have been meaning to purchase my own copy for the longest time, and as such I just visited your web site and ordered the book. Thank you for your amazing effort to put this book together and your insights at this site.

I was at a show earlier today and saw the earliest 64.5 Mustang that I have ever seen. Stock original 64.5 Mustang, 260 engine and 13 inch 5 lug wheels with bias ply tires. Scheduled built date of 31C with all the panels I could see date stamped between March 18 and March 22. Unit number in the VIN is 105735.

VIN indicates car was Detroit. Were they making cars in the end of March 1964? Is this unit number very early?

    Toolbox,

You mentioned a car show in Durham; when is it? I got my car all back together yesterday. For fathers day I was able to work on the car without any significant interruptions. I changed the heater hoses (see the story under first ride of spring) and while taking it apart I discovered the heater core was leaking so I got a complete rebuild kit and went to town working under the dash (Interestingly the heater core was the original one, dated 5C20, a few days before my scheduled build date). While I was in there I put the original AM radio back in and changed the heater control cables (included in the rebuild kit). Car is back to running and sounding great.

Also, for those in the CT area there is a car show on July 8th in Haddam called Rolling by the River (I think, but the date is the 8th of July and it is at the Haddam Meadows right off of Rt. 154), hope to see some of you there.

Wow, Now I am sorry I could not make the show with my car. It is down right now since I am replacing the heater core and heater hoses. I had my car there last year and saw several other Mustangs but did not see any Ks (although since I had my 4 year old with me we did not have enough time to see all the cars). Maybe next year the turn out of Ks will be at least 5.

I washed down the car and under the hood as best as I could being careful not to spray on the hot engine. Once it completely cooled I shrubbed under the hood and throughly rinsed in all the corners. It was a mess. I have been needing to pull the engine and clean and paint everything and now it looks like next winter is as good a time as any.

Sorry to hear that you are selling your car. I know that it could not have been an easy decision for you. I will keep my ears open for anyone looking for a great car. Hopefully this forum will continue to have access to your experience and knowledge after you sell.

I feel your pain. I took the car out the other day and gave it the first real wash of the season (thinking at the time that it had been running pretty problem free for a while). After drying it, I decided to take a quick ride to get all the water out of the hard to reach places.

After a pleasant drive I was about a half mile from home I smelled anti-freeze which I thought might be related to the long winter storage in my unheated garage. As I slowed for a traffic light steam started coming out from under the hood, then I noticed anti-freeze coming out between the hood and the fender. I figured this could not be good news.

Luckily the temp gage was still low so I drove straight home. When I opened the hood there was anti-freeze dripping from everywhere, and I mean everywhere. The upper heater line had split (about a 3 inch split right at the bend where it attaches to the engine) and had emptied most of the contents of the radiator into the engine compartment. Also since it was coming out between the fender and the hood it sprayed all over the car from the hood to the back bumper.

Good news is the engine never even got to mid temp (luckily I was that close to home or I would have ended up sitting on the side of the road for a while) and the engine is fine, but what a mess to clean up. Plus I get the fun of changing both heater lines from the heater box out to the engine.

All in all I was fortunate to be so close to home and although it is great fun to drive, it is still good to get the hands dirty once in a while while working on it.

Howdy and welcome from another CT K owner. I live over in Haddam and there are two 65 Hipo fastbacks in town. Sounds like we have enough of these cars in CT for a get together. Maybe we should try when the weather gets a little warmer (and the roads less salty).

    Once again, welcome.

Another under educationed question. I hope you guys don't mind.

I was talking with my dad the other day and he said that the 289 4v heads (A-code) heads were different from the 289 2V heads (c-code), something about the combustion camber portion of the head be different.

    1) Is this true?

    2) If so, are there any casting numbers or marking that identify 289 4v heads as such?

    3) If so, what would those castings/markings be, and where would I look to see them?

    Thanks in advance,

I suspect this won't mean much to you guys out West or prehaps down South, but I live in in CT. It hit 50 degrees today and since it has not snowed around here yet (unsalted roads) I was able to take my car out for a ride today. I loaded up my 5 year daugther and drove to several different parks. She got to enjoy the nice day palying in the parks and I was able to recharge my "K code" soul for the long winter months ahead.

Best wishes to everyone for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year in 2007!

I really hate to show my ignorance to often but I need a clarification.

My car does not have an original HIPO fuel pump on yet (I, like many others, am searching). The 4th edition says the 65 HIPO fuel pump should be a 3939S. The picture of the 65 HIPO fuel pump in the book is not a push button top.

My question is; Is the 3939S pump that I need for my 65 fastback a push button pump, or does it look like the one in the picture on page 48 of the 4th edition?

You are probably right. The engine was sitting in the back of a van that is slowly rusting into the ground. Between the rust, lighting and angle it is very probable that the digit was a six not an eight.

    Thanks

Well, hope this question is not to stupid, but here goes.

I was offered a 289 cheap. While looking over the engine (aftermarket intake and value covers) I noted the following casting numbers on the block:

    D10E 8015-AA

    2B10

I am thinking that it is a 1972 302 block but wanted to get some input. Any comments appreciated.

    Thanks
