Don't know if the newer type is called soft locker
but the name makes sense as it's a much softer
engagement than the old type. I have the old type (original)
in my 65 Shelby and it's a lot of noise and you can
really feel when it hooks up while the newer type I have in my
67 Shelby is softer and produces very little noise.
The old type is sexier while the newer type is more drivable.

I found it in the 1965 Mustang Electrical Assembly Manual
page 28.

All the Shelbys I have seen made at San Jose in May and June of 65
have had the three screws.

The 65 Assembly Manual specify -B choke cable with two
different knobs. One for 64 and one for 65. The grommet
through the firewall is also listed together with a clip
to hold the cable attached to the shock tower to fire wall
brace on the passenger side.

My early May 65 Shelby has three holes as does my Feb. 65 C-Code coupe. Magazines showing 65 Shelbys from Dec. 64 also have three holes.

I checked a picture from 65 showing a Shelby made in March as the
radiator is dated 2-65 and the choke cable is run sideways through
the firewall and there appears to be agrommet in the hole.

look for the holes in your car.

To be sure to get the correct one I bought both types
and my friend in Sweden rebuilt my valve with one of them and his (6S923) with the other.

As you said the date code on the end plate determines whick seal kit
you need. My 65 Shelby built at San Jose the first week of May, 1965 has a valve dated 39-5, i.e. day 39 of 1965 and I believe it has the one piece plunger while my friend's 66 Shelby built second week in Jan.1966 I believe has the two piece. If I don't recall wrong, the size on one of the seals is different in size. Also, I can have reversed the different types above A and B. Exactly 11 treads are visable outside the nut on
39-5.

Nice and very rare piece but unfortunately the date code is too late
for all 65's for the real purist. It's dated August 3, 1966.
Also, the filter bowl has Autolite instead of FoMoCo for the same reason. About 10 years ago I bought a 3939 from Allen Cross and it's dated May 28, 1965 and has the FoMoCo bowl. Sad enough but it's dated about one month to late for my car.
