Thanks for all of the help and information. I am going to get a repro set of plates with the following letters/numbers IF none of you think this combination for some reason did not exist. RSN 625 will be chosen. I appreciate the input you all have provided

Can anyone provide the series of numbers used on California black plates that were issued on November 03, 1965? Going to get a set of reproduction black plates for a car sold new at Canoga Park Motors, 21520 Roscoe, Canoga Park, CA on 11 - 03 1965 and want to be as accurate on the numbers/letters as possible. Thanks for any help or direction you can give.

Does anyone know which other vendors sell the decal with the thin plastic covering on it. Is it an exclusive of Jim Cowles or do others sell the same decals?

This morning while fooling around in the shop I took the time to check the raised numbers between the posts on four yellow top coils and here are the results: 5B,5D,6D,3B. I could not find/read the date code printed on the coils so no relationship can be determined to raised numbers/ manufacture date but it does seem that one is related to the other. The mystery continues.
-
Until recently I was convinced that those little characters indicated the date the coil was molded. My April 22 65 car had 5C molded on the top of the coil and it seemed logical that those little figures indicated March 65. I was corrected on one of the forums, so I have no clue as to the true meaning. I hope that sommeone can solve this little mystery! One more thing that I THOUGHT I knew but was proved wrong, and one more example of the importance of sharing knowledge on the net. Somebody somewhere has the key to solve this and maybe they will share their knowledge with the rest of us.

My 1966 San Jose C code conv (scheduled build date Oct. 30, 1965) has "19078-4S " clearly stenciled on the tube of the driveshaft. My 1965 Hipo from Dearborn (scheduled build date Apr 22. 1965) clearly has the same number (19078) but the suffix is not readable. Wish I knew the meaning of the suffix, and as Jeff noted, not all shafts have this or any number stenciled on them. If others will check their "shafts" and post the results here we may be able to establish some kind of a pattern. Anybody up for detective work?

Mr. Mark Kabus from United States Steel, Irvin plant returned my calls late this afternoon and he now has all of the images and information that we have gathered up to this point. He seemed eager to help with the questions about the logo stamping on some Mustang gasoline tanks and I expect that within a few days we will be able to understand exactly what the characters stamped on the USS logo mean and how to read them. Will share the info with all of you when it arrives.

To bring those of you who have been following this subject up to speed, here is what is going on. Today I atempted to contact by phone a person at the IRVIN WORKS plant of USS where the tank material was produced and try and get some help decoding the information on the USS logo stamp. Frustrating experience, passed from the "guard shack" to "MR KUBUS" with several detours and with the exception of the security officer at the "guard shack" really never did get to talk to anything but an answering machine and some poor lady who kept transfering me to different people who "might know something". Left messages for different individuals, and finally just wrote a letter to Mr. Kubas explaining what I was interested in and to check his messages after he read the letter. I included images and an explaination of what we were interested in and why we were interested. Perhaps something will come of this, at this point I really do not know. Also attempted to contact the Local Union at the Irvin Works but never did talk to a "human being" there - just transfered from one voice mail to anoher - even the "operator" there was only available by voice mail. When or IF i hear more on this I will post on this forum, and if any of you have any input or added information on the logo or a contact at the USS Irvin Works plant at Davosburg, PA please help us out.

Still trying to understand the meaning of the characters stamped on the line under the date stamp. More images can be found on the VMF pertaining to this. If anyone has any contacts with someone who worked for USS during the 60s, perhaps you could ask then about this stamping, or if you have any ideas about understanding the markings on these tanks please share them. Thanks

Can anyone provide an image of the USS logo on a Mustang gas tank? I am trying to understand what the row of numbers under the date mean and need more examples to examine. Please help if you can.

I usually make the little rubber pad out of the center section of a truck mudflap. The center parts are the correct thickness while the outside is thicker and makes a "frame" that surrounds the center. Any place that works in medium or heavy duty trucks will have these in the junk, and one mudflap will make enough of those little squares to supply you and all of the members of your Mustang club. The staples that work for me are stainless and available at most large builder supply stores. The "legs" are normally bent out rather than in like a conventional paper staple. I drill two tiny holes for each staple in the shroud and the rubber while they are clamped together, than push the staple through and bend the legs outward to duplicate the ford issue shroud. Look at an old shroud if you can locate one and you can get an idea of the construction details and placement. Better yet, someone on here may post an image of the real thing!

Dave. do you feel that the marking on the tank in the early Shelby ( the one Drew did) is the genuine article? As you know, my interest is in the 65 - 66 years, and want to use the InLine tube stencil badly, but only if it is correct and that there is no doubt that it is correct. I had hope that it was but have never actually examined that logo. Charles turner has a tank in storage that has the logo as well, and I am waiting for him to post an image. I feel that in 91 when Drew Alkazar was in the restoration business that there was no stencil to replicate the logo and that the tank pictured is in fact the "real deal". Obviously all gas tanks would not have the logo, but enough of them did that perhaps others will join this discussion and maybe check out an old tank and provide us with more pictures. Next we have to work on the date code with I am certain is somewhere in the logo, we just need to figure out how to read it. The guy at Inline told me that when you purchase the stencil they include the appropriate date code with the stencil in the form of seperate little additional stencils. I have a hunch that the sale of the "USS' logo stencil is going to pick up soon. Thanks

Dave: Thank you. Have you or others looked at the stencil available from Inline Tube? It looks so much like the ones you have posted. Please check out their website and give your thoughts. I looked last night in the Sept. 91 issue of MM and could not find that photo. Could you please check for sure the issue of MM that contains the article on the Shelby convt. restored by Drew? I am trying to get a really good view of the logo. The image of the Boss tank also looks the same as the one that was used on GM cars. Looks like we could use this stencil on Mustang and Ford tanks and be correct? Does anyone see a difference?
Any more photos of an original?

It must be the article I had in mind (or what is left of my mind). Can you scan and post or scan and email the page? Trying to see if the stencil available for the General Motors tank is the same as the logo used on metal used in Ford mustang tanks. Sure appreciate your response.

Thank you, Charles - I hope that it turns out to be the same one that is currently available in stencil form. I have looked and looked in my pretty sizeable collection of old MM magazines and simply cannot find the article that shows that logo. I am sure the image was taken of a tank that Bob Perkins had and i am positive that it was published in MM. Stuff such as that makes me question my own memory, sometimes my sanity. Can hardly stand the wait for an image of the tank logo on an early car!

Thanks, Bo! There are several people interested in this "logo" and determining if it was used on the early Mustang/Shelby tanks. Over the last many years the subject of the U. S. Steel logo on early tanks has come up over and over in discussions among hardcore restoration individuals (dare i say nut cases?). Now that we have a source readilly available and at a moderate cost (25.00 $) many of us would like to add that little "extra" touch to our cars IF if can be documented. My opinion is that the same logo that is being sold for the Chevy crowd is correct for the Ford tanks of the same era (circa 64 - ? ). It is my hope that you can hook up with someone who has an original and we can make a positive determination that the proper logo stamp for our early cars is the same as the one available. I am 90% convinced that it is correct but until we have photographic proof I will wait. Thanks for your help - together all of you on this board can unearth almost impossible to obtain information.

Thanks, Bo. I would love to get enough of us involved in replicating this stamp, stencil or silkscreen, whatever would be required to at least keep pace with the detail of restoration that the guys with brand "C" or "M" take for granted. I think that those little details are what makes a car great as opposed to good. Thanks for the offer and I am anxious to hear what you find out about the logo stamp.
