It would appear that the production lines were set up to install the 4 speed, as the default trans, and the hipo automatic was a " special order " option and was not stamped when the engine was stamped. anyone agree or disagree?![]()

anyone else? this is important for those of us with original automatic K codes.

Thanks! -
Does anyone know where to look for a Kars vin on a hipo C-4? I've scoured the thing and see casting numbers but no vin, and it might not have any, just don't know....

Thanks. -
I thought it different than a hipo of any description.....could there be a 302 in it??!!

Tell me [ us ]about the hipo fairlane. I am interested, send a PM if you like. Duncan

Does he claim to have original drive train? Any panel replacement? Squirter bottle wrong, carb, intake, distrib wrong, spacer wrong, anything else significant? Any paperwork? Restore costs could easily top twenty K, plus parts too, that would be $50K or better. A wash if you could hold the costs down..and they seem to go up...IMHO..

The Harmonic balancer looks to step-down in diameter?! Does the fan/spacer look right?!

-
I received the blanks, thanks. looking at them, the stamping was light in places. I am comparing these to the originals. Thanks for the prompt delivery, Fred.

I think this is the K coupe that was bid to nearly $32,000. Thats a strong price. I am surprised he didn't accept what might have been a record for a coupe. There may be hope for my coupe?! and others. any comments on installing air??

-
And Jeff, would you help us with those things you understand should NOT be there? Thanks.

-
Jim, as you say, the K code numbers came from a different source, but this is where readers are looking to identify that " source ", so if you can post that source, or reputed source, it would be beneficial. Thanks. There may be more than one estimate from more than on source. Anyone?

As covered in previous threads, for the benefit of new members and remind the older heads, GT's have been bogus'd and the
kars that are for sale from time to time are under intense scrutiny to verify the true GT from the wannabe. How useful is the buck tag in this? Why did Ford use it so randomly? and what are the defining details of a true GT? What is the date that GT's began to be made/offered? I am looking for a 66' 09K with GT package. My current K has the buck tag. If it's not there, what do we need for solid verification?

Based on your assessment and the great pictures, I have ordered two of these spacers. I hope to assemble a complete hipo spare. I have not examined my spacer, but when I do, I will have a decent replacement if needed. Also happy to support the hipo reproductions of this quality.
Cheers

very nice, I hope you plan on continuing to enjoy it on the road while you wait for a buyer....

-
I would say " buy the one you found" and then share it with us! I sold my hipo GT convert, but it needed the works, thou it was pretty original and extremely rare. [ one of one]. good luck

Ahhhh, C-4 hipo autos, my passion.... There was a recent thread regarding the inner workings of this rare auto trans....the parts to overhaul a genuine hipo C-4 doesn't involve rare parts...AS LONG AS YOU KEEP THE RARE PARTS INSIDE THAT ARE REUSEABLE. aftermarket " bands", parts that wear, are still readily available. see Bob Mannel's small block Fords epic work. There is continuing help here as you go along..Cheers, mate.

that looks like the real deal, for sure, but someone here might have better info

We are assuming this car is seriously for sale...and we all would like the details...condition, equipment, mileage, and of course, price...VERY COOL

Threads like this bring home the " wheat from the chaff " notion as it applies to our Mustangs. A car that has the right color paint on the engine, properly located switches, etc., can all be done to a car without the right serial number....Therefore, a knowledgeable inspection will be the best defense against fraud.....maybe the ONLY defense....
Consider all the Kars that have been reviewed on this site, and you get the picture.
perhaps members could offer occasional notices in the usual publications, i.e., Hemmings, Collector Car, etc., financially supported by, say, a separate fund, as a public service for our particular K mark. This could dramatically increase the legitimacy and value of the K series, that have been inspected and notorized by the inspector..
I for one would pony up some bucks to get this notice in the HMN.

Yours IS more complete, I think its worth in the high teens. Its potential is limited slightly by not having the original drivetrain. Finished it will have some serious money spent to get it correct and assembled and painted, [ good paint jobs ain't cheap ]. $10,000 isn't out of line for a top paint job, some hipo caps and rods, period correct hipo parts as needed....assembly by a craftsman....Don't get me wrong, its a good car, I'd like it, but I finished a project last year and....the money just flows, ya know? Let us know your thinking...
