I found a better comparison in an early 1970's Off Highway Parts book for service parts cams.

    289HP.019 lash 46BTC 84ABC 94BBC 36ATC 310/310 lift .298/.460 82 overlap

    Boss: .025 lash 34BTC 76ABC 86BBC 24ATC 290/290 lift .290/.477 58 overlap

289 Hipo uses 1.6 rockers and the Boss 302 uses 1.73 rockers. Some sources list 289HP lash as .018 intake/.020 exaust.

Hipo specs from Muscle parts and Boss from 1970 Ford Shop Manual.

The specs are hard to compare since they are from differant sorces, but basically the hipo has more duration and the boss has more lift. I hope this helps. Tom

This is a picture of a 1959 Ford rear end. I took it out of a 59 Ford around 1970 so I know for sure what it is. You be the judge to decide if it is the same as yours. Back in the day, we always used the 57 to 59 Ford rear end in the 64 to 66 Mustangs to use a 9" rear end. It is the same width, uses the same bearings, and the 8" Mustang axles interchanged. You had to use the Ford Plates and U-bolts. The Ranchero and v8 station wagon rear ends used bigger axle bearings. The only major difference in them is the straight tubes at the end. I hope this helps you.

I've been on this site a few times and and like it so I finally decided to join. I have a white 64.5 K coupe built June 12, 1964. I bought the car in 1980 and restored it around 1989. It still looks OK with just a few dings on it. I lost interest in the car for a few years with other projects but I always seem to come back to it. I regestered it recently. I also have a SVO, a 96 Cobra, and a 05 GT. You might say that I've been a Mustang fan for over fourty years.
