I used that method one night at the race track on a street stock charger class car , we broke a valve spring in a heat qualifier race and were able to replace it in time for the main feature ,

One way to keep the valves closed while removing the springs is to feed a piece of cloth clothes line into the spark plug hole before the piston comes all the way up to TDC then rotate the crank by slowly by hand to TDC that should keep the valves closed for you to do what you need to do, leave some of the string hanging out of the plug hole so you can just pull it out after you have the springs back on the valves,

Back in the day of the oil rubber umbrella 289 intake & exhaust valve seals they would become hard & very brittle over time then break apart in very small black pieces ,follow the oil path return down to the oil pan and through the oil pump screen and lock up the pump or break the pump shaft , what do your valve seals look like ,

I brought it here because 662PLUS2 jamed it to an e bay seller then becomes a member here to use this site to have his private auction by not following the forum rules by not stating an asking price for his block but to call him and make offers.Quote from UnicornAll I'm saying is I come here to learn more about the cars I enjoy and not to hear bickering and back fighting or opinions about other members. If you are offering a warning about parts misrepresentation or fraud or even just a plain wrong fact someone has that you can correct well great! But your beef with another member is between you two - why bring it here. Peace - out!

662plus2 had all the information he needed to make it right , i had to file a non paying bidder claim with e-bay to recover the listing fees, end of story.Quote from 662plus2Chuck is correct I did back out of the purchase after finding an engine that was a better match for my car 30 miles from home and was delivered by the seller. I based my decision on the fact that there were no other bids so I did not prevent a sale and I offered to pay all of the listing fees. Chuck told me how much the listing cost and asked me to send a MO. On 5/3/11 I sent an e-mail asking for his address but he did not reply.

I for one will not contact 662plus2 to make an offer on his parts, 662plus2 was the winning e-bay bidder for a complete 289 i had listed on april 16th 2011, then contacted me a week after the auction ended to tell me that due to the fact it would take to much time out of his weekend to pick up the engine he would not and did not complete the transaction after he won the auction, just my 2 cents,
