I have never heard of anyone having records of all the dealers for 65/66.
Yes, but all '66 Shelby's (at least normal ones), were built at the San Jose plant... that's what we're pointing out here. The VIN above is for a NJ built car.
If you have a 5A base that was originally painted blue, it was probably a service replacement part. Might have come in a cobra dress-up kit.

The centerchunk has 2 date castings. I have never observed a date code on the rear housing. The tag could be changed, but not the casting dates on the pumpkin.
Is that the one with the hole for the filler tube blocked off?

Is it possible to have an Assembly Date of Mar. 2, 1966 but have a Mar. 8, 1966 date on the steering box? The steering box looks original but I don't know.
One important thing you need to realize is that the DATE code on your door data plate is actually the day the car was "scheduled" to be built and usually not the actual day it was made. When the order came in from a dealer, the dataplate VIN and other information was assigned, including a scheduled build date. On the '67 and newer, we are lucky enough to have Marti reports to tell us what day a car was actually made. Generally, I see very few Marti reports with cars made ahead of schedule or the actual day it was scheduled.
Yes, I would agree on 3 months or earlier, but usually most dates are within 0-6 weeks from when the car was made.
