DDL9423 was a lacquer mix. As far as I know, PPG has discontinued the DDL paint line. Might check with your local re-finish supply store and see if they can cross-reference it. Basically, though, you want something around 30% flattened, which can be achieved with pretty much any brand of paint.

The only problem with dipping is that the solution gets between welded panels and is hard to get out. It also removes ALL sound deadener and seam sealer. You'll end up spending up to $300-500 to put all the seam sealer and sound deadener back on the car with a quality product. Be careful what parts you dip. I don't do hoods and trunk lids and it removes the bonding agent between the upper and lower portions of the panels. E-coating after dipping is recommended.
Generally, though, if the car is solid, you really don't want to dip it. If it's very rusty and requires a lot of panel replacement, dipping would be best. Media blast will not warp panels if done correctly.

Dave:
The finish in Jeff's pics is consistent with what I have seen on the early cars too. Here's an original off a '65, simply cleaned up:

I've always thought it was either the date the block was machined or the date the engine was assembled.

I thought the car looked familiar, but w/out a VIN listed, wasn't sure.
Guess hpmx has had a few discussions in the past concerning this one.

A/C been added. Early style air cleaner makes you wonder what the scheduled build date was...
Nice looking car otherwise.

The pace car coupes are rare in numbers, but have always felt that the low options and the non-performance orientation of the cars held back the values. Ford could have taken an opportunity to do something more special with those cars, like at least put a 4 speed in them and handling package. Otherwise, they're basically just a car with special paint and decals. Now, one of the 3 original track cars would have to be up there on the rare scale and the desirability scale. I know one went on auction last year, but don't think it was in the right place at the right time for selling.
As far as the general production numbers, those type of numbers would normally have been published by Ford to the media and are most likely taken directly from the database while it still existed.

I just found the 101418 one in my own database.
Guess that answers my question! Has to have only been a handful made though.

The 3rd edition of the hi-po book shows 4 64.5 K code San Jose cars, but 3 of them have unit numbers beyond 125001, so the book is wrong to classify as 64.5 cars. That leaves just one, 5R08K103665. Does anyone know anything about this car and whether or not it's legit? The Jim Smart/Haskell production guide does not list any 64.5 K code San Jose cars, just D,F and U codes. Just wondering if there were actually any K 64.5's (generator cars), built at San Jose.

Is the 45th celebration a National judged show as well??
There is a judged class, but usually very abbreviated and not done to the same level as a regular MCA national show.

If the full engineering number is the same on the C4DE units, then that might suggest that one has been rebuilt in the past or mixed/matched during a rebuild/re-core.

I don't recall ever hearing any definitive on 'DEP', but would think it means something like Dearborn Engineering Plant. That's just a guess though.

I hope to have a fresh restoration of a '65 K convertible completed in time for the 45th, so would be happy to join the display at the 45th if there ends up being one.
I may also try to get my '65 K fastback together by then, who knows?

So I can expect to pay $200-$300 for a Dearborn or Metucheon 4 speed core-(that needs to be recored) and may be upwards of $500. for a San Jose unit because they are also the ones used in Shelbys??
These are all 2 row units-right?? Thanks!
Yes, that's about right.

Yes, the fittings, but also the engineering number stamped into the top or side would be different.

In Concours Driven, you can have Halogen headlights.
I may have some extra originals, which would you prefer to match your set?

The VIN is in the registry, with last known location in IA.
