    An early '65 GT would have simply had the same axle bumper plate as a K code. The rear build-up of the car where the dual exhaust reinforcements would have been carried over from K codes to A code GT's.

    The first dealer price list to include the GT option was the second price list printing for '65 and had "April 1965" on the top. Dealers had to receive these sheets before they knew the new options were available. I suspect that the price sheets made it to dealers around late March '65. If you look at the Jim Smart/Haskell In Search of Mustangs listing, there are just a handful of cars listed as GT's with February dates. I suspect those were most likely GT clones as the authors had no way to verify every car. GT cars appear with more consistency starting at the end of March '65 and then going forward.

    caspian65, or any one else who know's. Please turn to page 89 of the fourth edition . On real 1965 GT A code, mustang's built between march and august 65, would they have the standard plate shown on the top of the page,

    Absolutely not.

    or would they have the early variation #1 hi-po, k code plate, shown on the bottom of the page? thank you Domenic R. Mamone

    A code GT's just have a normal K code style snubber. Here's one on a late May '65 Dearborn GT (A code). You can barely see it in the pic, but the rubber bumper is bolted to the plate like it would have been on a single exhaust car.

    Those exhaust tips that were on ebay appeared to be some kind of prototype, I would be skeptical if they were an actual production line item.

    I have a friend in Canada with an extremely early '65 GT A-code fastback. His car has some weird dual exhaust configuration. It is the only one I have seen that *might* have had the Arvinode system.

    Regarding dual exhaust as an RPO for non-GT A codes... we've beat this subject to death. I have only heard of one car being ordered like this, but the order was made by someone "in-the-know." I have a copy of the 1965 Dealer list price, which is what dealer's went by when ordering cars and options. This, coupled with original dealer order sheets from 1965, show no single line item for "dual exhaust." It simply was not a RPO. The only way one was *supposed* to get dual exhaust in 65-66 was if the car was any K code (GT or not) or if the car was an A code GT.

    As far as I know, there were only 3 dual exhaust configurations for 65-66. The first being the transverse system, second being Arvinode and then the typical 'GT' exhaust. The 'GT' exhaust had clamp on trumpets or turn-downs (if a K code was not a GT.)

    Hope this helps with the discussion.

    I also wanted to know , if you ordered a factory dual exhaust car in 1966 on an a- code non GT car, did you also get the variation #2 plate? again sorry for speaking out with out doing my own research first. Tony's book is great , but you can draw the wrong conclusion sometimes, thank you very much, Domenic R. Mamone

    Dual exhaust on an A code 65-66 was not a line item on the order sheet. Dual exhaust could be had by ordering a 65-66 as a GT or a K code.

    Agree with Dave, the outer part appears to be a later version. The 'TDC' marking is usually before the tick marks on a correct C5 balancer. The date code would also be to the left of the tick marks. One last thing, the tick numbers should read '3 6 9 12'

    HCC-AX is the correct steering box for a 65-66 K code and also other V8 mustangs that had manual steering and the special handling package.

    4M16C is the assembly date of the box, which decodes to:

    4=1964

    M=December

    16=16th day of month

    C=Most likely a shift code

    Keep in mind that if Jan 11th is what is on your door warranty plate, it is not necessarily the actual build date. It is simply a "scheduled" build date and could be off by weeks before or after.

    A mid-December '64 steering box would be perfectly acceptable on an early Jan '65 car though.
