  • This 65 Mustang convertible Red (originally code 3 Poppy Red) with white (now modified) standard interior is for sale on Clasiq Auctions with a starting bid of $10,000.00:

The all important 5th character on the VIN identifies this convertible as a K-code when it left the factory in Dearborn. It’s a very rare combination and is believed to be 1 of 181. The original engine left the building many years ago making it a perfect candidate to become a high end Restomod It was on its way to getting a 427 side oiler, when the previous owner decided instead to install a 5.0 Liter 302 V8 from a police interceptor. With a 5-speed and modern suspension upgrades, it is a blast to drive and is a head-turning showstopper.

Probably the most popular color combo for a ‘65 Mustang convertible is what you have here looking stunningly beautiful in Red with a White convertible top over a 2-tone Red & White interior. The fantastic looking Carroll Shelby 16 inch alloy wheels with vintage Cobra flavor wrapped in Continental wide rubber perfectly fill out the wheel wells. The car sits lower than stock and the stance is just right. Every angle is eye candy and the proportions are perfect. The look blends old school traditional styling with subtle pro-touring restomod upgrades.

The 2-tone Red and White vinyl interior is in fantastic condition and mixes the best elements of both the Pony interior and the GT trim package with the Rally Pack 8,000 RPM tach and clock mounted on either side of the steering column. You also get wood veneers, wood rimmed steering wheel, thick carpets with Mustang logo and vintage style modern stereo. The iconic white shift knob is prominently on display on the chrome Hurst shifter. The soft top with glass back window is new and powers open for the complete mid-60’s convertible experience.

The 5.0 Liter 302 V8 from a late model police interceptor is mated to a T5 manual transmission with a Hurst shifter. Performance upgrades include, a Ford 9-inch rear, FiTech Electronic Fuel Injection, aluminum intake, headers, stainless steel exhaust, aluminum radiator, electric fans, new coil, new alternator, new battery, new Ford Racing starter and Cobra finned aluminum valve covers and air cleaner. Suspension includes a $3k Total Control Kit, Sub-frame connectors, Coil-overs, 4-wheel disc brakes, torque arm, and front and rear stabilizers.

Arizona rust-free condition, fantastic inside and out and from top to bottom. The paint has a deep shine showing a few light scratches from limited use. The interior is inviting and looks practically new. The underside mixes originality with some modern upgrades and shows light surface rust only. The engine runs strong and the transmission shifts positive, precise and smooth. Rear main shows some drips. The upgraded suspension provides a modern feel with surefooted handling. 4-wheel disc brakes are firm and give you excellent stopping power. Fun fact from the Owner. The door tag reports a DSO 89, which is in fact a vehicle that was built and kept by Ford for it's use until no longer needed and sold off to the general public. Most of these vehicles were used as perks for executives, management and other "important people". They would keep them for months to maybe a year or two until newer models replaced them as they were mixed into the fleet. Others were used for promotional work and advertising.

The scarcity of the K-code, first generation Mustangs have caused the prices at auction to reach some previously unheard-of levels. Combined with its legacy as one of the first truly high performance Mustangs, they are highly sought-after collectibles. The convertible body style makes this one even more rare. As a restomod, it’s one you don’t have to be afraid to drive. This is a high quality driver with some terrific modern performance upgrades. It’s a show stopper, but won’t be collecting dust sitting hidden away and won’t break the bank.
